A Welsh Way Principles of Play session - In Possession - Specific into Small Sided Game - Switching Play.
The aims of the session are to develop the players understanding and application of Switching Play in specific game like scenarios and in the small sided game.
The practice design allows for repetitions of specific scenarios in game like situations and will support players ability to assess exactly when to switch the focus of an attack based on the pressure applied.

Block 2 - Coaching focus will be on:
1. Ball Speed is required to 'outrun' the defence. Diagonal Passing driven with pace - FB to FB pass will not always be on but the coach will look to identify an example opportunity and can utilise a Walk through to highlight the option and coordinate other attacking player movements to prove the value.
2. Exploiting Space - is a key principle
* Forwards scanning for gaps between oppo back line
* Players to provide width with timed third man runs or up back and through.
* Decision making - Team approach - 2 choices - 1. Win 1 v1 and switch or 2. Create overload to switch them-self of to create for another to switch.
* Challenge players to find space to receive in 3 secs
3. Attacking transition - when possession is recovered, the Whites must look to quickly secure it with a pass to a team mate in space. That first pass is the platform for securing comfortable possession and relaunching the next attack.
Challenges, Conditions and Targets
Oranges should occupy two of the three vertical zones closest to the ball and remain compact with minimal space between players.

Organisation:
No change to pitch set up bar intro goals in place of the 2 small ones.
Play 8 v 7 - Whites set up with a keeper in a 1-1-4-3 formation (Explain) 2-3-3
The Orange team are playing a 1-4-2-1 formation and are principally set up to defend as in a 4-2-3-1 with a twin screen in front of a flat back 4, but the second player the 10 in play supporting the 9 on the counter attack and also providing pressing cover when the Whites play out from the back.
halfway = offside line for the Oranges
Spare footballs in each goal and around the practice - the coach can decide to play in at any position to test both sides attention.
Explanation:
The White team are looking to switch play and score after getting the ball into a wide zone (Zones 1 and 3)
How:
The players will be instructed to now apply the concepts practised in the Specific to the SSG.
The coach (C1)will continue to work with the White s only IP
Orange team not coached but are managed to Defend the Switch but will be Breaking Lines and seek to play through around or over the whites to score.
Coaching Notes:1. The White 4 and 6 will be the link players, supporting the player in possession in order to be one of the main options to switch play. Can they be available in 3 secs - open body scanning back foot and play
2. Diagonal passes from Zone 1 to Zone 3 should be played with pace to allow the receiving player time and in space.
3. 1v1s - When the wide player receives in advanced positions they should be directed to quickly attack diagonally towards goal. In doing so the wide player will create space both inside and outside of the defender.
4. Risk Taking - The wide player should shoot low and hard towards the far post to increase the chance of rebounds for team mates.
5. Final Pass - The wide player should look to cross towards the back post if crossing from the touchline, cut the ball back if crossing from the by-line and drive crosses to the near post when close to the penalty area.
Challenges, Conditions and Targets
Orange/Whites - a regular goal is worth 1pt
Whites - scoring within 2 touches of a pass into Zone 2 (the central zone) from either of Zones 1 or 3. is worth 2 pts.

Defend the Switch
1. Force Play Wide
2. Keep Play Predicable
3. Pressure on the Ball
4. Leave furthest Players
When IP = Breaking Lines and seek to play through around or over the whites to score in either of the 2 mini goals.
Block 1 - Coaching focus will be on:
1. Player positioning IP Width / Depth -
* Strikers alternate runs between going long to push back the defence, or dropping in to receive a pass between the lines.
* 7 and 11 and two full backs will coordinate movements to effect overload and under-load opportunities in the channels - Out to In - In to Out.
* CBs (4 and 5) support possession in the central area.
* White 6 will play as a pivot and will look to get on the ball in 'quarterback' positions. 6 must find space in 3 secs. Open Body, Scanning, Back foot, Play out
2. Ball Speed to shift the focus of the attack
* How ? Short passes to draw defenders towards the ball before finding the free player.
* Who can switch ? Typically 6,7 and 11 between the lines but also FBs (long switch) If no wide player then CBs who will look to switch back to the winger or full back on the other side.
