Description

What: Passing out of the back

Who: The 1st & 2nd Attackers (4, 5, 2, 3, 6, 8)

Where: Defensive third to middle third

When: Goal Kicks and/or with possession in defensive third

Why: To maintain possession and advance through the thirds

How (Technique): 

Curled inside pass:

  • Approach the ball from the side, at an angle. Position your non-kicking foot next to the ball
  • Strike the ball and lean backward with arm open for balance
  • Use the inside of your kicking foot to make contact on the outside of the ball, slightly wrapping your foot around it
  • Apply spin by brushing the ball with the inside of your foot, from the inside to outside, with the ankle rotating into the body
  • Make contact in the center of the ball to keep it on the ground or in the bottom to gain lift
  • Aim to curve the ball inward, away from defenders, toward your target

Introduction (15 mins)

  • Organization:
  • 14L x 20W grid divided in 2 (14L x 10W)
  • 14 players: 2 groups of 4 players and one group with 6 players
  • Team of 6 start as targets on the outside - 2 north and south each, and 1 east, 1 west
  • 1 ball per team inside grid
  • Programming: Active 2m / Rest 30s / Sets 6

Instructions:

  • Teams inside the grid pass ball and score points (both teams with a ball)
    • 1 pass to a teammate = 1 point
    • 1 pass to switch from right to left (or left to right) of the grid = 3 points
    • 1 pass to target or neutral = 1 point
    • Bonus: 2 points if pass that switches from right to left (or left to right) breaks/splits opponents
  • Rotate teams in each set (make sure 2 extra neutrals are also accounted for - might have to reshuffle teams in each set)
  • Use progressions listed below and rotate neutral team each set

Tactical Coaching Points:

  • Scan quickly to see surroundings when not on the ball
  • Adjust body shape to receive with directional touch
  • 1st Attacker: aim to break lines (splitst) with the passes

Progressions & Regressions:

  • Set 1 & 2: 1 pass = 1 point, 1 switch = 3 points, pass to neutral = 1 point
  • Set 3 & 4: cannot repeat passes consecutively (eg, if pass to neutral, next has to be switch, etc)
  • Set 5 & 6: possession game, 2 teams in the middle face each other with 1 ball - if team recovers possession they keep the ball and team that lost becomes defending team

Main Activity (25 mins)

Organization:

  • 14L x 20W grid divided in 2 (14L x 10W) - adjust size as necessary
  • Attacking team right side: 4, 2, 6
  • Attacking team left side: 5, 3, 8
  • Neutrals: 1, 9
  • Defenders: 3 on right side of grid, 3 on the left (restricted to each side)
  • 4 mini goals, 2 on top corners, 2 on bottom baseline
  • Programming: Active 6m / Rest 1m / Sets 4

Instructions:

  • Ball is served from same end every time (by target player 1, alternate serving, right and left)
  • Neutral team: 1 server (1), a target (9)
  • Ball is played to either half and attacking team on that half tries to score by scoring on mini goal and/or finding neutral target 9
  • If repetition ends with a goal on mini goal, target player 1 plays/serves to other side of grid, and same rules apply
  • If repetition ends with a pass to the target player number 9, then target can play directly to other half and 'flip' directionality
  • If defending team recovers possession, it can score on central mini goals
  • 3 defenders restricted to each half (no cross overs)
  • Alternate defending team, attacking teams, neutral team and overall roles in each set
  • Competition and score tracking!

Tactical Coaching Points:

  • Create a micro-structure to build out - attacking team can employ roles (4/5, 2/3 6/8)
  • Look far first: look to break lines when on the ball
  • If pass to break is not on, look for wide player/suppor

Progressions & Regressions:

  • Give attacking teams numeric superiority

Conditioned Game (20 mins)

Organization:

  • 14L x 20W grid divided in 2 (14L x 10W) - adjust size as necessary
  • 1 big goal (or use 2 cones/mini goals, etc)
  • 2 mini goals on each top corner
  • Programming: Active 6m / Rest 1m / Sets 3

Instructions:

  • Goalkeeper plays to attacking team starting in build out structure
  • Defending team starts behind the half-way line (represents area)
  • Attacking team score on mini goals, or by connecting with target 9
  • Defending team score on main goal
  • If attacking team scores with target 9, blue starts with the ball right away

Tactical Coaching Points:

  • Create buildout structure
  • Receiving with control: use the appropriate surface of the foot based on the direction and speed of the pass
  • Scan once before receiving the ball, and scan again while the ball is traveling towards you
  • Look far first: look to break lines centrally when on the ball

  • Regular match
  • Emphasize and teach restarts: Goal Kicks, throw-ins, free kicks

Tactical Coaching Points:

  • Shape (diamond, triangle, or formations)
  • Goal Kicks: review playing out structure
  • Look to break lines as a first attacker with a pass
  • Emphasize that attracting pressure in build up opens space behind opponent
