Sharks & minnows5 mins

Organization:

30'X30' Playing area.

12 cones, 7 soccer balls.

8 Players per playing area. (Players and playing area can be adjusted depending on the amount of participants).

All players inside the playing area start the activity with a soccer ball.

The players dribble the ball to find open space in the square.

The shark starts the activity outside of the square.

The shark enters the square to take the ball away from the players dribbling the ball inside the square.

If the shark takes your ball and kicks it out of the square, that player then retrieves their ball, leaves it outside of the square and then enters the square as a Sharks.

Players inside of the square cannot stop dribbling or moving, if they do they are out of the game for that round and must watch until that activity is over.

Coaching points and progressions:

Dribbling with your head up using the insides of your feet. Finding open space to loose your attacker. Shielding the ball from your attacker with proper body positioning.

Progressions

You can add a neutral player who is outside of the square that may move freely to help players in distress from their attacker (the shark). The players may pass the ball to the neutral player, move to open space to receive a pass back to aid them from their attacker.

If the shark intercepts a pass to the neutral player, that player who made the pass is now a shark. If the neutral player has a pass intercepted they are now a shark and there is no neutral player for the rest of that round.

Circle Passing10 mins

SET UP:

• Up to 12 players in a large circle; 1 ball to start.

INSTRUCTIONS:

• “Go!” – player with the ball gets 2 touches: one to enter the circle and one to pass to a teammate. The first player follows his/her pass to the other side of the circle. The receiving player then has 2 touches to receive the ball and pass to a different teammate, then follow their pass, etc.

OPTIONS:

• Use multiple balls.

• One player stays in the middle of the circle, passing to different players on the outside, who receive and pass back in one touch. Rotate players after 30 seconds.

• Multiple players (i.e., 2-4), each with a ball, stay in the middle, passing to different players on the outside. After each pass, they follow the ball, run around the outside player (overlap) and come back into the middle to receive a return pass and continue. Rotate players after 1 minute.

Key Factors

This practice is all about technique and talking. The actions of player B are dictated by players  A & C.

There are 4 calls in this particular practice:

  • Time
  • Man On
  • Turn
  • Two's

Organisation

1: TIME: Player A will pass the ball in to player B, who will turn on the spot and play a pass to player C

2: MAN ON: Player A will pass the ball into player B, who will play a pass straight back to player A. player A will then pass back to player B, who will turn and pass to player C

3: TURN: Player A will pass the ball into player B, who will turn and dribble the ball to player C, play a quick 1-2, before dribbling back to his starting position, before making a pass back to player A

4: TWO'S: Player A will pass the ball into player B, who will pass the ball straight back to player A. Player A will now play a long pass around player B and into player C.

Once each activity is played 3 time, so that all 3 players rotate. Once all 3 players have rotated within their activity, they move onto the next.

Four Corners Game15 mins

Set Up:

Two Teams

4 boxes at each corner of the field, 1 player in each (2 players from each team will take a corner)

How:

- players to pass the ball around with the ultimate goal of passing to one of their players in the box

- once a player in the box is passed to, they switch spots with the passer and are now in the field of play. This gives the team a point. The passer now takes the spot in the box and waits for the next pass.

- players cannot pass in the same grid they just received a point in.

Progression:

- two touch max

- one touch max

- all players on the team have to touch the ball before getting a point.
