Edgemont Badgers - Week 3 - Overlapping runs in wide areas (2v1s flanks)
Technical: Outside push pass, timing of movements, execution of 1v1 moves, use of body to protect ball/disguise pass
Tactical: Timing of pass, decision making based on defender's position
Pyschosocial: Communication (Hold, Overlap), how players support each other during play
Phsycial: Movement off the ball, timing of run and communication, use of body to manipulate the ball/defender

Organization:
See figure. Big goals on both sides with GK (if possible, other wise use puggs as shown). Balls with GKs.
Instructions:
Ball starts from keeper's throw to attacking player. Players then play 2v1 to goal. Player who shoots goes to defensive line. If keeper saves, they can distribute to start the counter attack on the other side with the same ball. First team to 10 goals wins.
Players have to attack from the half of the field the keeper throws to (cannot cross middle).
Coaching Points:
(Overlapping players)
- What do you see (cues) to tell you the overlapping run is on? (space in wide area of the field, attacker driving inside 1v1)
- What should your movement be like to stay onsides? (Timing of run, 1st attacker waiting as long as possible to play the ball into space)
- Where should your first touch be toward after receiving the ball on the overlap? (#1 across defender (front or back) to get to goal or #2 Down line for cross if defender recovers)
Progressions/Regressions:
P) Switch sides
P) Goalkeeper can choose which side to distribute to (both side could attack). If keeper makes the save, has to play to opposite side the ball came from (secondary learning outcome, switching point of attack/playing away from pressure)
P) 3v2, only 1 player can cross the blue line.

See the guidance at the top of this page to understand why you are not seeing interactive Football/Soccer images.
Organization:
See figure. Two wide flank areas. Balls in half circle and in net with GK. Three counter goals for defending team. Coach blue attacking team.
Instructions:
Teams must always have at least 1 player in the wide areas (outside the goal box). Scoring with buildup through wide areas is worth 5 goals. Everything else is worth 1 goal.
Coaching Points:
- Why overlap? (Take advantage of space wide, create 2v1s, or make defender choose to create a 1v1)
- Who should overlap? (Which player is driving with the ball? A or B?)
Progressions/Regressions:

See the guidance at the top of this page to understand why you are not seeing interactive Football/Soccer images.
Organization:
Have players in positions they play during the match. 3-1-2 vs 2-1-2-1, numbers as in figure. (Positions based on 3-3-2 formation(9); 3-5-2 (11))
Instructions:
Fifa rules. Play half pitch, yellow scores in three pugg counter goals (or big goal with keeper).
Coaching Points:
Prinicple(s) of play - Penetration, Width, Mobility
- What is the correct moment to overlap? (Driving at defender, space out on flanks)
- Why do we overlap? (Create 2v1s in wide areas, get crosses in, create confusion to take player 1v1)
- How do we overlap? (Physical mobility)
- Who should overlap? (Based on defenders' position, where is the space; inside or outside?)
- Where should we overlap? (Ideally middle to attacking third)
- When should we overlap? (Moment to "OVERLAP" is when player is driving in at a defender and there is space out wide)
Progressions/Regressions:
Key Words:
"OVERLAP"
"HOLD"

Organization:
See figure. Teams of 5 or 6, two puggs set up as shown for progression B.
Instructions:
Players pass in pattern as indicated by coach.
In B, players play to goal. First team to score 12 goals wins.
Coaching Points:
- Quickly on the move after passing (How do I overlap?)
- Review vocab "SET"
- New Vocab "HOLD" "OVERLAP""
- Technical passing
- Receiving with the back foot (allows for easier 1 touch play/shot/cross)
- Receiving with front foot (allows faster touch, and disguise of pass)
Progressions/Regressions:
P) Pattern B. First team to 12 goals wins.
