Function/SSG

Organisation: Attacking with a front 3 (4-3-3). Reds look to score in the big goal vs GK with Yellows aiming to score in the 2 target goals on the half way line. Ball begins with Red 6 who acts as a server for this practice. Each time ball goes dead it begins with Red S.

Reds:1-3-3 (coached)

Yellows: 1-4-2 (managed)

Scenario 1: Ball played straight to LW to try & make a 1vs1 situation against RB.

LW: Receive on the half turn a few yards in off the touch line, can she beat the RB in a 1vs1 situation to try & get a cross in to the box or a cutback. If RB defends well & forces her inside can she drive inside & play a slip ball through to the N9, a pass to the N10 or even get a shot off on goal.

N9: As the LW picks his head up can the N9 make a run & pin the near side CB to stop her doubling up against the LW. If the LW gets in to a crossing position in a wide area then the N9 attacks the front post.

RW/N7: Start wide but as LW takes her touch to drive then thats her trigger to make a diagonal run inside LB & LCB. Can she become a 2nd striker? When the ball is with the LW to cross then she will atack the back post.

N10: Attack the penalty spot when the ball is in wide areas, drop off & create an angle if LW can't penetrate or expose RB. Can they play out to other Winger instead or slip balls in behind for the front 3.

Managing Yellows:

1) When the ball goes in to the Reds wingers get tight & mae sure they can't play forwards.

2) Yellow screens to stop ball being played in between the lines to Red N9 or N10.

Scenario 2

Organisation: Scenario 2 = Ball played in to 7 but pressed aggresively by LB.

RW plays in to the N9 for her to try & get a shot off on goal.

RW: Play quickly a zipped in pass to the N9 feet, continue to make a forward run on the outside of the LB to receive the ball back for a cross in to the box. Occupy full width ifn build up to stretch opposition out & make more room for the N9.

N9: Pins the near side CB again, can she get it straight from the RW & turn & get a shot off at goal. If she can't turn & shoot then can she set the N10 then arc her run in behind the 2 CB's to get a through ball from the N10 through on goal.

N11: Narrows off slightly when the ball goes in to the RW & the N9, if the ball gets set back to the N10 then that's her trigger to make a diagonal run passed the outside shoulder of the RB for a through ball inbetween RB & CB.

N10: Make sure on the opposite side from the N9, can she play through split passes for LW to get in behind. Become a striker if the N9 drops deep to receive & can't turn.

What If's?

What if the N9 can't turn & shoot is forced backwards & ca't play a pass in to the N10?

N9 then drops deeper to receive with his back to goal from N7, he then sets a pass back to the N6 for a ball in behind or down the sides of the defence for the N10 to become a striker & make a strikers run.

Scenario 3

Organisation: Scenario 3 = ball is played straight in to N10 in behind opposition midfield.

N9: Pin the CB on the same side as the ball when it goes in to the N6 which should allow more space for the N10 to be 1vs1 with the RCB. She can either arc her run between LCB & LB for a through ball from the N10 or make a diagonal run between CB's to get a reverse pass through the 2 CB's to be through on goal.

N11: If on the same side as the N10 who has the ball then as soon as N10 picks her head up then thats her trigger to make a diagonal run in to the penalty area. Can she take a positive 1st touch in to the box & get a shot on goal or a cut back for the N9 or N10 to score.

N7: Stays wide until the ball gets played in behind the opposition defence then makes a run from out to in to receive the ball in behind. If the N9 makes a run inside inebtween the CB's towards the ball then Can she become a 2nd striker?

Ensure that the winger on the opposite side of the ball attacks the back post & arrives at the back post as the ball is about to be delivered (don't go in too early).

What if's?

What if the RCB drops in to mark the N10 & stops her from playing forward?

Can the N10 play a 1-2 with the N9 for a return pass for the N10 to go through on goal. If not can the ball be set back to the N10 from the N9 for a pass to the N8 who has made a 3rd man run in to the box.

Drill

Organisation: Possession break out drill. 4vs4 in the middle grid depending on numbers.

Team in possession must make 3 passes before attempting to play to a team mate in one of the corner boxes, if successful then that player gets released & joins in to make an overload in central grid.

Rotate players from the boxes accordingly.

Progressions: 1) Have to make 4 passes now before being able to break a player out.

2) Make it competive in the breakout boxes with players able to tackle each other.

1 goal: Making 5 passes, 2 goals: breaking a player out & maintaining possession.

Coaching Points:

Ball speed, play through around or over.

Play on the half turn to see 3 boxes at all times, check shoulder 3 times before receiving the ball.

Look to utlise the spare player to make overloads, angles & distances to support the player on the ball, around the ball & away from the ball.

Look to switch play when we can & transfer the point of the attack to create a different picture.

What's the best way to score keeping possession or by breaking a player out?

Who is the best player to break out & where would the overload be most effective?
