In this pre-season session the concept of playing out from the back from goal kick situations is introduced and developed. Players will learn how to play out using a variety of methods (quick interchange passing, switching the play and using our goal keeper) to progress the play out of our defensive third whilst in control and maintain possession against an opposition using wingers to initiate high press.

Organisation:
5v5+GK in a 40m x 30m. The game ends up a 6v4 in the pitch with 2 neutrals and 2 GK's playing for possession team. The aim is for the possession team is to maintain possession and score in one of the two mini goals. If the BPO team win the ball they can counter attack and score in the big goal for a point. The 2/5's for both teams are locked into wide central corridors, the 4/6 for both teams are locked in the central corridor. The 8 from both teams plus the two neutrals can operate in any corridor.
Variation/Progression:
- Each player on the possession team has a maximum of three seconds to control and release the ball
- Set a time limit for the possession team to play out within
- Remove positional limitations
Team Tasks:
Pass the ball in a controlled manner for as long as possible without losing possession.
Player Tasks:
- Collect and restart play quickly
- Play forward first always, sideways only if you can't go forwards, backwards as a last resort as a result of pressure and no off the ball movement
- Pass and move - move into passing lane after pass to provide passing option for 2/5/6/8/10
- Play in different lines and corridors to other team mates
- Ball carrier to always have options left, right and far at all times
Coaching Cues:
- Play forward first always, sideways only if you can't go forwards, backwards as a las
- When in possession after goal kick, use quick, accurate combination play to escape the pressure, whilst looking for spare player.
- When playing out width and depth must be maintained to stretch the opposition.
- When under pressure look to switch the play through long direct, short combination of pass back to keeper.

Organisation:
11v9 on a half pitch (minimum numbers of 8v6 - BP: 1/2/3/4/5/6/8/10, BPO: 6/7/8/9/10/11) . The white teams attempts to build up from the back to advance the ball to one of the front three who dribble or pass to a team mate over the half way line which result in 1 point. If the BPO team wins the ball they counter and attempt to score a goal for 2 points. In this progression the BPO team allow the GK to play to one of the centre backs. Once the centre back takes possession the winger presses from out to in to force CB to play into midfield under pressure.
Variation/Progression: (Progressions diagrams and descriptions on separate slides)
- Quick interchange play
- Switching the play (short and long passing)
- Using the goal keeper
- Playing long when under extreme pressure

Pass the ball in a controlled manner from our defensive third to the middle third without losing possession.
