CutBack Crosses

Principles & Session Focus

To improve the WB's ability to cross from the deeper areas and be able to execute 4 different techniques to create goal scoring opportunities.

Key Coaching Points and Areas of Focus

  • Timing of the movement to arrive to cross the ball first time or on the second touch
  • Body shape when arriving towards the ball to execute desired crossing technique
  • Scanning of opposition and team movements in the box to decide proper cross
  • Adjusting to possible defensive structures and movements
  • Organization and Instructions

The exercise is set up so that the WB's can execute different types of crosses from the cutback area. The ball is cycled through from one side to the other and then played either to the WB's feet or in behind for a first time cross. The 4 different target areas that they are looking to hit are

1. Front Post

2. 6 yard box

3. Penalty Spot

4. Back Post.

To hit these areas they have different techniques to use.

1. Cutback with pace

2. Flash across the goal

3. Chipped back post

4. Whipped away from the GK
