9v3 +GK Tactical Situation (20 mins)

FUNCTION

• This 9v3+GK tactical situation exercise focuses on using wide rotations (numbered players vs Team B). • The exercise begins as pictured, with a sequence of passes before the exercise becomes a live 5v3+GK play.

• The sequence will begin with both the full-back (Player 3) and winger (11) in the outer lane, and as the ball travels from centre-back (2) to the other (5), the winger (11) will initiate their movement to receive between the lines.

• As the ball is set to Player 8 (pass 3), the full-back (3) will move beyond the mannequin to join the attack.

• The 8 will play in to the 9, who will set the ball to the 10.

• Once the ball is set to the 10, the play becomes a live 5v3+GK situation for 10 seconds.

• The attackers will include the full-back joining the attack (3), the midfielder who received the set from the winger (8), the winger on the opposite side (7), and the 9 and 10.

• The scoring will be as follows: 1) Offensive team scores within 10 seconds is worth 1 goal. 2) Offensive team scores within 6 seconds is worth 2 goals. 3) Defensive team earns 1 point for every blocked shot; 3 points = 1 goal.

• After 10 seconds, whether the result is a goal, blocked shot or ball out of bounds, a new sequence will begin.

• The repetitions will alternate - two on the left and then two on right, using the same sequence.

COACHING DETAIL: TECHNICAL

PASSING QUALITY

• Passes between centre-backs and passes to the winger who is moving between the lines should be crisp, firm and on the ground towards the back foot of a teammate to facilitate forward progressions.

• When setting the ball to a teammate, use a soft touch to take the pace off the pass to allow next teammate to play a clean next action.

MOVEMENT BETWEEN THE LINES

• Wingers on both sides will start off in the wide zones (A+D). As the ball circulates from C to B, the winger in Zone A will initiate a ‘double movement’ - one in the opposite direction of the ball, and then quickly change pace to offer support between the lines in Zone B. The winger will be moving into Zone B as the centre-back in Zone B takes their first touch and lifts their head.

• The winger between the lines will orientate their body in a ‘side on’ position to set the ball with their back foot. • *Same detail when sequence takes place on opposite wing*.

MIDFIELDER SUPPORT AND OVERLAP

• As the ball travels from the centre-back to winger between the lines, the closest midfielder must quickly change pace to offer support ‘underneath’ to the winger.

• The support should be 8-10 yards from the winger in order to not ‘attach’ another defender to the situation.

• As the ball is secured by the midfielder, the full-back in Zone A will change pace to overlap and join the attack.

COMBINATION PLAY

• Once the midfielder receives the set, together with the 9 and 10 they will play a three-man combination before initiating the attack against the three defenders, again playing firm passes and soft sets to ensure attacking quality.

5v3 SITUATION

• As the ball is being set from the 9 to the 10, the winger on the opposite side (in Zone D) will look to make a diagonal run behind the full-back to either: 1) Receive a through ball and score within 6 seconds or 2) push the defensive line back to create more space in front for four other teammates.

• If a direct pass to that winger in behind defensive line is not available, playing towards the overlapping full-back in Zone A (Player 3) will be the next priority for a 2v1 situation along with the winger (Player 11).

• Use quick combinations (wall passes and third-man plays) to create advantages to score quickly.

COACHING DETAIL: MANAGING THE OPPOSITION

• The three defenders (Team B) will be passive until the 10 receives the set from the 9.

• Once active, apply collective, zonal defendin

8v8 + GKs +1 (20 mins)

FUNCTION

• This 8+GK vs 8+GK+ 1 conditioned game builds on the tactical situation exercise.

• Teams will attack in a 1-3-2-1-3; both teams will defend in a 1-3-4-1 in a middle block. The attacking team will always have an extra player, with a floater (Player C). playing the number 10 role for the in-possession side.

• The objective is to progress beyond the horizontal line to score.

• In defence, the players can move freely.

• In attack, all four vertical zones (A, B, C, D) must be occupied.

• The game space will take place between the two horizontal lines, which will also serve as offside lines for both teams.

• Before progressing into the final third, the team in possession must connect a minimum of two passes.

• In the final third, five attackers and three defenders plus the goalkeeper can be active.

• The attack will last for 10 seconds before the play is over.

• Once a goal is scored or the ball exits the final third (i.e. rebound/blocked shot etc), or the ball goes out of bounds, a new ball will begin in the central zone with the opposite team.

• The scoring will be as follows: 1) Offensive team scores within 10 seconds is worth 1 goal; 2) Offensive team scores within 6 seconds is worth 2 goals; 3) Defensive team earns 1 point for every blocked shot in defensive third: 3 points = 1 goal.

COACHING DETAIL: IN-POSSESSION

MOVEMENT BETWEEN THE LINES

• As the ball circulates from Zone C to B, the winger in Zone A will initiate a ‘double movement’ - one in the opposite direction of the ball, and then quickly change pace to offer support between the lines in Zone B. The winger will move into Zone B as the centre-back in Zone B takes their first touch and lifts their head.

• The winger between the lines will orientate their body in a ‘side on’ position to set the ball with their back foot.

DECISION MAKING BETWEEN THE LINES

• Once between the lines with a ‘side on’ body shape, the winger will have three options: 1) Receive side on with time and space and drive forward with the ball under control to commit defenders and free up a teammate. 2) Receive side on and link play directly with the 9 to continue to progress forward. 3) Set the ball towards the 8.

MIDFIELDER + STRIKER SUPPORT AND OVERLAP

• As the ball travels from the centre-back to winger between the lines, the closest midfielder must quickly change pace to offer support ‘underneath’ the winger.

• The support should be 8-10 yards from the winger in order to not ‘attach’ another defender to the situation.

• This supporting movement will also serve as a covering run in case of a loss of possession.

• As the ball is secured by the midfielder, the full-back in Zone A will change pace to overlap and join the attack.

• Simultaneously, when the winger receives between the lines with a side on body shape, the striker must be connected to the player and offer diagonal support if they have time and space to turn.

• The neutral 10 will look to offer support underneath the striker to link play for the in-possession team. After receiving a pass from the striker, the 10 will attempt to play either winger or the full-back in on goal.

RUNS IN BEHIND

• When the 11 receives the ball between the lines with time and space, the opposite winger (7) must be alert to make an aggressive run in behind the opposing fullback.

• As the player in possession lifts their head, the movement should be initiated.

5v3 SITUATION

• If a direct pass to the opposite winger in behind the defensive line is not available, playing towards the overlapping full-back in Zone A (Player 3) will be the next priority to try to create a 2v1 situation with the winger against the opposing full-back (*Same when sequence goes to opposite side*).

• Use quick combinations (wall passes and third-man plays) to create advantages to score quickly.
