Technical Warm-Up (15 mins)

Organization
  • 20x10 yard grids, gates positioned as shown as many as required. Players paired up.

Activity

Sequence 1 - Play starts with the player on the outside, who plays a pass through the gate to their partner. They pass back within two touches and move to either side of the gate. Where they receive another pass, players must receive and pass back with their back foot. Switch after 2 mins. Progress to one touch pass back into partner, rotate after 2 mins.



Sequence 2 - Play starts with the player on the outside, who plays a pass through the gate to their partner. The receiver takes a touch with their inside foot towards the outside of the gate, where they play it back. They then move to the opposite side and receive a pass from the other side, repeating the motion. Switch after 2 mins.

Coaching Points

  • Weight and angle of the pass into the dribbler (pass sets up for future success)
  • Cushion the ball into the direction you are looking to play
  • Speed of play and quality of movement
  • Keep on your toes
  • Scan the pitch

SSG1 (20 mins)

Organization

  • Two playing grids, small sides to increase number of touches.
  • Minigoals at either end 
  • 3v3 with neutral players on flanks
  • Pass-ins by neutrals

Activity

Players look to score on opposing goal. Extra points awarded by teams that use both neutrals in build up. 

Progression: Teams must use both neutrals before scoring. 

Coaching points

  • Passing looking to play forward. 
  • Adjust body shape based on approaching defender.
  • Neutrals look to stretch depth as well as width
  • Look to get forward with ball in wide areas

Station 1 (20 mins)

Organization

  • Half pitch, goalkeeper, cones as shown
  • After 10 mins, change starting positions of A and C players to opposite flanks.

Activity

1. Wide player A makes pass 1 to player B and moves to blue cone. Defender activates on pass 1 to apply pressure to central player B.

2. Player plays pass 2 into player A, peels off wide and maintains width on right flank. Defender continues applying pressure on the ball. 

3. Player A looks to play ball into Player C with pass 3 - who is doing agility cones at beginning of the sequence. Look to do within two touches. 

4. Player C looks to cross into either Player B at the far post or player A attacking the top of the box. Defender looks deny the cross. Player A = two touch finish. Player B = 1 touch finish.

Once sequence completes, A becomes B, B becomes C, C becomes Defender. Defender moves to player A position in recovery.

Progression: Defender looks to win the ball from players A or B.

Coaching points

  • Body position when receiving the ball
  • Speed of play to deny defender opportunities to close down.
  • Attack space and give wide player options.
  • Body position ready to finish (hips towards goal)

Station 2 (20 mins)

Organization

  • 4v4 (or 3v3+neutral)
  • 4 grids - 2 orange, 2 blue

Activity

Players look to score by passing into opposing team grids. Teams can play into their own grids to utilize space, but if they lose possession in the grid, a point is scored by the other team. 

Progression: Players move into the grid as the ball moves to score. Cannot stand in the grid and wait. 

Coaching Points

  • Body position when receiving the ball
  • Speed of play to deny defender opportunities to close down.
  • Attack space and give players in possession options.
  • Move as the ball moves, do not stand still.
  • Move the ball quickly to open up gaps and penetrate.
