Block 3, week 7
Outcomes of session:
To allow the GK's the knowledge to be able to judge their position and to know when they need some extra room
The backward movement is to be used from an angled position where the GK would otherwise be lobbed.
* Fast feet - forwards & backwards
* Positioning - backwards near goal line thus enabling the GK to have a more upward reach
Equipment:
Balls (4 & 5)
Cones / markers
Hurdles
Large goal

Instructions:
GK to receive 3 direct shots from the coach from position (1) and the 3 shots from position (2)
Questions for whole group upon completion:
* Which position was easier to save from (1)
* What could you do to make the save easier for the GK (move backwards to give the GK more time to react to the ball)
..

Positioning (2)
We are now to going to work from the angle which will make things much harder for the GK as it is opening the goal up for the attacker to either lob or curve the ball around the keeper.
The advantage of the GK moving back here is that it allows him to reach higher up toward the cross bar and also it will cover him for any curved ball
Instructions:
C to throw ball up over GK's head into far top corner
Progression: C to again throw the ball for the far top corner shot, the GK is then forced to move backwards to make the save at speed
- any save will do in this situation to just keep the ball out of the goal

For this example it is to be said that the attacker has managed to get in behind the defence and we now have a potential 1v1 situation
a. The GK from this position should not go out of his goal as it is more than likely that he will be beaten by the attacker (example)
b. If the GK stays where he is the attacker will probably lobb the GK from a safe distance or just dribble around him. (example)
c. The GK now has to decide that it is in his interests to move back into the goal and move the pressure onto the attacker to take a shot and beat the GK, this also allows the defenders to retreat in enough time to make a tackle and then the pressure is taken away from the GK
Instructions
GK to start mid way out in his box, when the attacker starts to move, he has to move backwards at speed and set waiting for the attacker to shoot when he decides to:
a. Shot at distance
b. Shot mid range
c. Shot close in - does the GK go for 1 v 1 or does he go for the block???

What the GK has to understand he is that he has a very large goal to cover and just diving at the ball will not enable him to save all shots, he will in certain instances have to take steps into the shots to stop the ball
Instructions:
The GK has to start beside the 1st marker and is not allowed to dive until he is outside of the rectangle, this will make sure he is having to take at least 2 steps before he dives.
