Skill final third pass and move skill drill:

  • Opposed attack vs defence drill.
  • Blue team take the rotations practices in the technique drill into an opposed setting.
  • Orange team look to defend an overload and keep a set defensive line.
Rules of play: Open play in the box outside the 18 yard box.A coach will occupy the 18 yard line to catch offsides.Only one Orange player can go into the 18 yard area to defend against the one blue player that broke the line to create 1 vs 1 situations.
Coaching points: Look to encourage the blue team to utilise the rotations worked on in the technique drill. Remind blue team players of double movements to create space for themselves. Observe the orange team and point out when they utilise good positioning for their team press. (Cutting off passing options, forcing players onto weaker feet, setting traps). Encourage blue players to be clinical when they break the line and punish slow orange players if they don't recover quick enough.
Progression: Go into a half pitch attack vs defence game situation with wide players and a full defensive line up including full backs and 2 more midfielders to see how players translate the skills developed into game realistic drills.
Regression: Place the two deeper midfielders at the back of the opposed box (shaded area) as unopposed players to reduce player pressure and allow the attacking side to reset without losing possession (prevent reduce in morale).
Interventions:Team interventions:Lateral ball movement to create space to break lines and allow for double movements.Utilising the area to create maximum space. What are the triggers for attacking movements? (Line breaking passes, Switches of play). How can the defence work as a unit? (recognising press opportunities, pressing at an angle to force play towards marked players, recognising when to sit off and defend as a flat line).
1 to 1 interventions:Highlighted players (^) movement to allow lateral ball movement. ( breaking the midfield line to drag his marker deep to allow the RCM to receive in space).Demonstrate situations where far side strikers can start to make the run through the gap in the defenders. Encourage deeper players to initiate the rotations practiced (communicating movements).
