Activity 1 (15 mins)

  • Activity Name- Reaction Dribbling Drill.
  • Activity Description- Set up as shown. Make the two wide gates different colors for example I have Yellow and Blue. Players start facing each other then do ball mastery exercises through the cones and into the gate. Once in the gate players can do boxes, taps etc then coach shouts a color- players need to be ready to react and race each other through the gate called. Once they do this they return to the beginning to be ready to go.  Be sure to change the dribbling exercise through the cones- for example players can use both feet, then single cuts, double cuts, toe taps, soccer boxes, roll tap, L turns.
  • Progressions/ Variations- Players can dribble to the gate perform a turn then race back to their starting gate instead. Ball can be ready in their gate and instead player performs quick feet exercises through the cones. Rather then coach shouting the color have one of the players just pick which color to go to by dribbling toward it.
  • Coaching points- Be on their toes ready to react. Nice positive first toward the color called.  soft quick touches when performing the dribbling exercises.
  • Small Groups- When working with one player coach can either join in or just call the color for the player. Any larger number just have players switching in for turns.

Activity 2 (15 mins)

  • Activity Name- Quickfeet and passing.
  • Activity Description- Set up as shown. 1- Player performs quick feet exercises through/across the cones while always facing the coach. 2-They then set up to pass the ball back to the coach on one touch (2), back peddle and set their body to receive a pass on their back foot and touch their foot across the cones (3).  Then they drive the ball past the opposite cone and pass back to coach they can then repeat the cycle. Be sure to change which way the drill cycles through so the player.
  • Progressions/ Variations- Change the way the player goes through the cones in the quick feet section. Add in a line of cones for the player to dribble through along the top part. Serve the ball into the air on the first pass or the second or both.
  • Coaching Points- Quick feet and minimal steps. Setting our body correctly to recieve the passes, so one hip facing where the ball is coming from one hip facing away.
  • Small Groups- For groups of 2- have the player replace the coaches job. For groups of 3 have one player waiting and one player starts in line with coach at the top. For groups of 4 eliminate the coaches role and have 2 players working one starts at the quick feet cones one starts after it-  2 players starting either side of the quick feet section.

Activity 3 (15 mins)

  • Activity Name- 4 goal Color reaction.
  • Activity Description- Set up as shown. Be sure to have different colored gates beside your goals. Have a pile of balls in the corner with you. Player starts in the middle box. Coach passes ball in, as the ball is played coach needs to shout a color and the player needs to react adjust their body to receive on the back foot and play the ball to that colored gate on 2 touches while keeping the ball in the box. For weaker players it might be better to give them more warning about which goal you want them to try to play into so they can adjust their body earlier and properly.
  • Progression- Progress to doing 1 touch passes. Should you need to with better players progress to the ball being thrown in.  Change where the balls are played from.
  • Coaching Points- Players should be constantly scanning to see where each colored goal is. Players should be trying to open their body and receive on the back foot- adjusting quickly while taking a look so they know where they need to play too.
  • Small Groups-  For groups of 2 replace coaches job with a player. For groups of 3 or more replace coach and change a goal for a player instead and just rotate players.
