Groups of 5: four attackers versus one defender. Attackers will pass around the perimeter of the rondo to keep possession. Defender will attempt to tackle away possession, intercept passes, and apply pressure to force attackers to make mistakes. Feel free to designate a pass count to earn points and make the drill more competitive (i.e. 7 passes = 1 point). Rotate players frequently and encourage constant movement off the ball and high-intensity defending.
Duration: Approx. 10-20 minutes. Play several rounds, rotate defenders frequently.

PASSING TO POSSESS: 4v1 Rondo
- Players will divide into groups of 5. If there is an odd number you can have a group of 6 and rotate one resting player. Use a small grid and tighten it up as the level of your group becomes more advanced. One player will defend, each of the four attackers will occupy one side of the square to laterally move and keep possession within the rondo.
- Possession is kept as attackers attempt to connect as many passes as possible before the ball is played out of the grid. You can reward points for pass streaks (5, 7, 10, etc.) based on the level of your group.
- Rotation: You can decide to have defenders in for a designated time limit (2-3 minutes or so), or players can quickly switch roles when possession is lost (i.e. the attacking player responsible for losing possession becomes the new defender within the rondo). Keep the movement faced-paced and with high-intensity. Always make sure soccer balls are nearby so play can resume quickly.
Coaching Points:
- Emphasize MOVEMENT OFF THE BALL! Players will need to move and support along their perimeter of the square to best support teammates and create passing lanes.
- Body language and positioning: Players should be in a "receive ready" position at all times (moving feet, light on toes, soft body shape, quick to react and control passes in).
- Receiving touch to space and changing direction with first touch is key for possession success.
- Passing technique: proper push pass, ball travels on the ground with the proper weight.
- High intensity! COMPETE!!
