 Specific Practice (10 minutes)

Set-Up:

  • In Possession Team – Blues (Coached)

    • Set up in a 1-4-2 formation (representative of a 1-4-4-2).

    • Set up in a 1-4-3 formation (representative of a 1-4-3-3).

  • Pitch Size: Half of pitch.

  • Play starts from the server positioned at the half-way line.

  • Blues aim to create overloads in attacking areas.

  • Reds counter-attack by playing into two small target goals or the server upon winning possession.

Coaching Focus & Key Points:

  • Find the spare player to exploit numerical superiority.

  • Player movement to create overloads.

  • Interchange positions to disrupt the opposition.

  • Commit opponents to create space.

  • Ball speed – quick, decisive passing to shift defenders.

Reinforcements:

  • Open body shape to receive on the back foot.

  • Sacrificial/decoy runs to create space for teammates.

Conditions:

  • Practice starts from the server and resets when the ball goes dead or a goal is scored.

  • Reds got  the 8-second to score upon regaining possession.

Challenges:

  • Can the Blues play forward, combine with their forwards wide and centrally, and play through balls behind the defence?

Targets:

  • blues will get 2 points if the score the goal by creating overload

  • reds get 2 points if they score the goal in 8 seconds when they regain the ball

SSG (15 mins)

Small-Sided Game (15 minutes)

Focus: Integrating principles from specific practice into game-like scenarios
Formation:

  • Blues (Coached – In Possession): 1-2-4-2 (representative of a 1-4-4-2)
  • Reds (Managed – Out of Possession): 1-4-3-1 (representative of a 1-4-3-3)

Setup & Conditions

  • Pitch tapered off: No fullbacks (Blue #2, #3 & Red #7, #11 removed).
  • Ball starts with Blue GK, applying previous practice concepts.
  • Reds continue 8-second counterattack rule upon regaining possession.
  • Blue wingers must stay high and wide to stretch the defensive line.

Key Coaching Points

  • Finding overloads in different areas (wide/central).
  • Exploiting 2v1 or 3v2 situations.
  • Ball circulation to shift the defensive block.
  • Quick decision-making under pressure.

Challenges & Targets

  • Challenge: Blues to  identify the spare player quickly and use overloads effectively.
  • Target:  blues will get 2 points if they score the goal by creating overload in wide or in center
  • Condition: Reds must counter within 8 seconds after winning possession.

Blue wingers must stay high and wide to stretch the defensive line.

PROBLEM  1: Blues struggle to find overloads

SOLUTION : Encourage midfield rotations & quick passing

WHAT IF: If opposition presses high, - use quick switches of play

PROBLEM 2: Defenders block central progression

SOLUTION: Use fullbacks or wingers to create width

WHAT IF : If they block wide areas, - use midfield runners in behind

PROBLEM 3: Blues struggle to break lines

SOLUTION: Increase ball speed and movement off the ball

WHAT IF: If movement is ineffective, use 3rd man runs
