Technical Practice: 1v1 Techniques (35 mins)

Set up/Organisation/Description:

  • 1, 2 and 3 represent first technical practice and 2 progressions
  • 1= Set up Red cone 6-8 yards from line with feeder 10 yards from goal line of flat marker goal
  • 2= Add 2 mini goals; 1 each side of the flat marker goal and add 2 additional feeders; 1 at an angle to each mini goal
  • 3= Move to 1 central 7 aside goal- Central feeder 15 yards out and wide players drop back accordingly

Instructions/Explanations:

  • 1= GK starts at red disc and drops deep to line. Takes volley from central feeder upon setting and returns ball. Feeder will then pop ball either side for GK to attack and smother
  • 2= Initial phase same as technical practice 1 with GK dropping and taking feed. 2nd phase is that central player can pass either side to wide player who can either take a loose touch for GK to smother or control well and attack goal. GK decide to smother/ block/ drop deep and stand
  • 3= Same at TP 2 but with 1 large central goal (7-aside). Progression that central feeder can recover and apply pressure to wide player (Adds complexity to GK decision making). Also second phase feeder can drive through middle to encourage spread.

Coaching points/learning objectives

  • Effective movement- starting point to line to create reaction time
  • Head up seeing the picture- Set upon triggers
  • Effective handling
  • Decision making on when to use different techniques: Depth 14+ with ball under control, Smother (Quick Acceleration, Lead with hands, quickest path to ball and rest of body blocking goal in case striker nips in); Narrow Block (angles) / Spread (centrally) (Small adjustments, Present hands in front, Knee closest to post high, Extend dropped leg to cover low shot across goal, open up shape depending on distance to goal)
  • Knowledge of triggers which affect technique i.e. poor touch/ ball under control, central/ angles, no pressure/ recovering defender
