Breaking Lines (20 mins)

Organisation - Breaking Lines

Area - 1pitch - 40x30 area.

Players - 12-16

Description - the group will be split into two teams, once they are in the two team's they will be put into the area but at different sections of the area. The ball will be played into the white team and then they will pass the ball between the three in their area then when they see the chance to pass the ball through the reds section they will pass the ball to them and then once the other players on their team gain possession of the ball they will do the same.

The reds will try to attempt to stop the ball being played through their area. They will attempt to cut out the passing line they should stay tight when they are watching the white pass the ball so they can't exploit a gap or space to pass the ball through their area to the other players on their team. If they win possession of the ball they will then begin to do what the white team were doing.

Coaching Points - In Possession:

  • communicate when passing the ball.
  • be on the move to constantly show option for your team mates.
  • can you play split the opposition with your pass..
  • keep the opposition guessing, don't be predictable.

Coaching Points - Out of Possession:

  • stay tight when stoping the passes
  • communicate with each other to stop the passing line.
  • when cutting the passing line can you control the ball so you gain possession and not give the ball back to the opposition.

Progressions:

  • there will be a a player allowed to go into the white area but it has to be a player that is facing the opposition, meaning the red from the far end cant go into the white area to defend it has to be if the whites in area one have the ball the red in area two can go in and defend them, if the red's in area four have the ball only the whites in area 3 can go in and defend them. To begin with they are passive defenders meaning they cant tackle them they can only put pressure on them. If they aren't winning the ball then they can tackle them.
  • Adding onto the first progression, the team can now instead of playing through to break a line they can play their passes over the top to break a line as when breaking lines isn't just playing through it is also playing over

Holding Possesion (20 mins)

Organisation - Keeping Possession moving

Area - 40x40 box, with a split in the middle.

Players - 12/16

Description - the players are split into two teams of 6 or 7 (number depending). Once they have been put in their teams then they will be split into 5 players in one side of the pitch and then one player from each of the teams in the other side of the area.

The team who starts with the ball will have to make 4 passes, once they have made the four passes they need to either play the ball to their player in the opposite side or they can dribble the ball over to the opposite side. Once the ball has gone to the opposite side of the area they need to ensure that one player from both teams stays in the area they where in.

If the team in possession of the ball they will then begin to make the 4 passes.

Progression:

  • every time the ball is transferred into the side where one the players are there will be a goal introduced and they will need to get score. If they score play begins in the area they scored from.
Coaching Points (In Possession):
  • can the team move off the ball, creating spaces to either dribble with the ball into or pass the ball into.
  • once they have made a pass they are either positioning themselves to get the ball back and transfer to the opposite side or they can find another player.
  • keeping their body shape open ready to receive the ball.
  • communicate with each other, giving a man on shout, or saying 1-2.
  • if they can get 1-2 touches in and then transfer the ball.
  • on the fourth pass can they play the ball through the gap they see if there is on or drive into space they see and transfer the ball.

Attacking The Final Third (20 mins)

Organisation - Attacking the Final Third

Area - half way line to the goal.

Players - 12-16

Description - the team is split into a defensive unit and attacking unit. The defensive unit are going to have to defend the final third ensuring they can stop conceding a goal, whereas the attacking unit are looking to break through the defensive unit and score a goal using what they have just done in the breaking lines and the holding possession practices.

The attackers will have the ball on the half way line or just infront of it, they will start with the ball by playing it to one of the wingers or directly into the striker, once that has happened they are looking to break the defence down and score.

If the defenders win possession of the ball they are looking to break out using their two midfielders and get the ball back to where the practice started.

Coaching Points (Attackers)

  • can you play quick and fast keeping possession and look to get into space the defenders can get back into quick.
  • dont force the ball into the final third, look to expliot the wide areas and play the ball in low and hard.
  • if you get in behind the defenders dont complicate it and look to score.
  • communicate when you are moving the ball, looking to get the left winger at the back post if the ball is out on the right and the opposite if the ball is on the left wing.

Coaching Points (Defenders):

  • listen to who is set as the captain and if they are holding the line stay with them.
  • can you force the attackers into a mistake by staying tight to them but making the space small they are trying to get into.
  • double up on the players if they are in the wide area.
  • when you win possession treat it as a counter attack.
  • force the players wide if they dont look comfortable.
  • dont be afraid to make your presence know on the striker.
