Session Objective: To execute wall pass patterns against a deep block to create spaces to penetrate in behind.

Organisation:

2 red cones 10 steps apart. Yellow cones 5 steps wide centrally.

Explanation:

Pattern starts with red cone playing a 1-2 with their closest yellow cone then playing to the opposite line. They follow their pass to back of line and pattern continues. Rotate middle players every few minutes.

So Change it:

- 1/2 with both yellow players before playing to end.

Can we ensure accurate first time passing?

  • Can we play our passes to our teammates outside foot?

  • Can we accurately weight our passes so our teammate can take the ball in stride?

Organisation:

30 by 20 grid, disced off ends of 5-6 steps. 4v4 in middle, balls to side with coach. small goals on both end.

Explanation:

Pattern starts with coach playing a ball in. Attackers will look to beat the defenders by executing the wall pass to get behind defensive team into the end zone. One defender may enter the end zone to defend once ball enters.

So Change it:

- Allow players to dribble into the end zone if opportunity presents itself. One point for scoring via dribbling in, two points for scoring on end of a wall pass. 

Team Task:

Can we play a wall pass to get in behind the defence?

  • Can we play our passes to our teammates outside foot?

  • Can we accurately weight our passes so our teammate can take the ball in stride?

  • Can we scan before receiving?

Organisation:

30 by 25 grid. 3 defenders and a goal keeper in place. Attackers in groups of 4 rotating.

Explanation:

Ball starts with blue at their small goal who will play a unopposed bounce pass from the 9 or wingers and play starts. Attackers going on the big goal, defenders aiming to win the ball and play out to small goal. Rotate attacking team after each play.

So Change it:

- Insert a minimum amount of passes if attackers are going in behind too quick.

- If successful, take out a extra midfielder to make it 4v3.

- When happy with progress, expand to a 6v6/7v7 with same philosophy.

Team Task:

Can we retain possession under pressure before getting in behind?

Coaching Points

  • Can we play our passes to our teammates outside foot?

  • Can we receive with a open body shape taking our first touch in direction of pass?

  • Can we accurately weight our passes so our teammate can take the ball in stride?

  • Can we retain possession until an opportunity to break presents itself?
