Topic: Attacking the final third
Area size: Half-pitch
Number of players: 14 outfielders + 2 GKs
Timings: 2 blocks (5 minutes each)
Set-up:
- In Possession 3-2-2-3, no back 3
- Out of Possession 4-3-3, without the front 3
- Flats funnel is added one coached team's end due to lack of FB's for IP team and wingers for OOP team
Technical skills:
- Variety of passing, dribbling, shooting, receiving techniques associated with attacking the final 3rd
Physical considerations:
- Multidirectional nature of LSG makes it that both teams have quite a bit of both anaerobic and aerobic fitness training with sprints for quick transitions and lack of planned interventions.
Psychosocial skills:
- Lots of communication is required to execute well-timed rotations and movements on, around and away from the ball.
- Growing the confidence players have to be expansive and flow in the final third and the patience required when attacking a well-drilled low-block.
Tactical behaviour:
- Rational occupation of spaces against a low block, passing patterns, off-ball movements to attack the box, positional rotations.
Intervention strategy:
- Walkthrough to explain positional shapes and wide pattern
- Stop after 5 minutes to move to block 2 and explain changes to the set-up
- Possible freeze interventions to explain various tactical details
- Concurrent feedback to keep intensity high and give instructions without decreasing ball rolling time
Elite game evidence:
"The attacking team should seek to create 2v1 scenarios within 4v3 and 3v2 overloads as this will allow them to use the spare player more effectively, whilst also serving to isolate the defender."

Walkthrough: Explain 10's roll-out to escape deep pressure
- OOP team now instructed to press the ball and step a few yards up
- IP team now looks to use that to their advantage by getting the 10's to roll out so DM's can break the line by going around the opposition block
- From then on, they can look to play into the front 3 in behind
Possible freeze intervention: Explain diagonal runs for wingers

Block 1 (5 mins)
Walkthrough: Explain formations and underlap pattern
- OOP team defends in a 4-3 low block, no pressure for DM's on the ball.
- IP team looks to attack the wide areas by circulating the ball wide and look to hit the run of the ball-side 10, while other 3 attackers crash the box to get on the end of cutbacks.
Possible freeze intervention: Walkthrough varied box movement once we are in a position for cutback.
