Objective: Improve long ball execution, build-up play, and defensive pressing under pressure.

Setup:

  • Two 12x12-yard boxes placed 25 yards apart.
  • 5v2 possession game in each box.
  • Two defenders apply pressure to regain possession.
  • One neutral target player can be used as an outlet if needed (optional).
  • Small counter-goal for defenders to score in when they win possession.

Drill Rules:

  • Possession team completes 5 passes → Earns the right to attempt a long ball switch to their teammates in the opposite box.
  • Receiver must control the ball cleanly and restart the passing sequence.
  • Defenders win possession → Can immediately counter and score in the small goal.
  • Scoring system:
    • Attackers: 1 point for every successful switch.
    • Defenders: 1 point for winning the ball and scoring.
  • Rotate defenders every 2-3 minutes.

Coaching Points:

???? Long Ball Execution:

  • Use the correct technique (driven, lofted, or chipped pass).
  • Accuracy over power—find the teammate's feet or chest.

Receiving Under Pressure:

  • Check shoulder before receiving.
  • Use the body to shield the ball if necessary.
  • Good first touch to maintain possession.

???? Defensive Transition:

  • Quick reaction when the ball is lost.
  • Press aggressively to force errors.
  • Immediate counterattack mindset.

Variations to Increase Difficulty:

  • Increase Distance → Make the long ball 30-35 yards for more difficulty.
  • 1-Touch Limit Before the Switch → Forces quicker decision-making.
  • Add a Third Defender → More defensive pressure, making passing sequences harder.

Why This Drill Works:

✅ Game-realistic transition moments.
✅ Forces accurate and purposeful long balls.
✅ Encourages quick pressing and defensive counterattacks.
✅ Keeps intensity high with competitive elements.
