Learning Objectives:
Improve technical defending. Introduce team defending across a line, particularly in relation to the back four, but contextualize elswhere in the 4-2-3-1 (midfield lines)

Modified Piston Drill:
four players with ball in hand play catch -- defenders shift, slide, drop, and step as appropriate. Defenders try to touch the ball, while keeping proper body shape (side on, leaning in, quick feet)
After 15-20 seconds, ball is tossed up (or up and over) and defenders head away (can headed clearance be to space for fullback to run on to?) sprint to half line and return
New four enter & repeat
Coaching Points:
- quick feet
- check shoulders to see line moving as a unit
- constant communication

Over the River transition & shape game.
6v6v6 -- Team plays 6v2 in grid, and tries to connect with team on opposite side through four defenders in central zone. If defenders win, they play to other team, and take up other side, while team losing possession becomes defenders: two to pressure ball, three in central area.
Coaching Points:
-Good body shape, low CG, shorten strides as you close
-Communication: who has the ball? where is cover?
-Four in middle: communicate where you want the ball pressed; help your teammates make it predictable
- Transition: if you lose possession, close the ball quickly and organize

Orange team are attacking the goal. One of the attackers passes the ball to the blue players who fires it back to the attackers. The attackers then have to get by the defenders in their designated box. Once beyond the designated box they can use the full size of the penalty box.
Once one side goes the other side automatically goes.
Introduce the defenders pushing up to half way after a couple of goes to encourage defenders to defend high up the park.
Change defenders and attackers.

Closing Warmup (15 mins)
Closing warmup
Close on ball as if closing on player with ball -- take away the central line, push to one side, and then jockey back, switching direction of "herding"
Coaching points:
-- arc the approaching run to take away central
-- herd to one side
-- body shape: chest over knees, nose over toes, even as you move backwards
-- big strides to close ground, short strides to get your feet under you.
Progression:
Have a player on the ball and attempt to play pass across the byline
Intersperse dynamic warmups with the technical warmup; jump work: laterals, verticals, one legged laterals; core: planks, scissors.
