Skill Introduction (20 mins)

Setup:

2 cones, 2m apart. One ball per group, two players in each group. Shown in Diagram A.

6 setups shown in diagram B.

Instructions:

Blue Player (defender) starts on the line (they must have at least one foot on the line).

Red player (atacker) starts with the ball behind the line, the attacker can choose how far back they want to start.

To score the red player must move the ball over the line.

Once the attacker takes a touch the defender is allowed to try and win the ball. If the defender tries to win the ball before the attacker touches the ball it is replayed.

After the attacker scores or the defender wins the ball they swap over.

Competition:

Players will practice for a minimum of two minutes to understand the rules and the game.

They will then play two minute games, they score by dribbling the ball over the line.

After 2 minutes the player with the most points in each group move up to the next group (the winners of the top groups switch sides to the other top group, losers of the bottom groups switch sides to the other bottom group).

For example, the winner of "1" moves across to "1A" the loser of "1" moves down to "2" etc.

Key points:

Can you get the defender off balance by moving you body (dropping the shoulder, faking a change of direction).

Can you move quickly when you move the ball (this will be easier if you can get the defender off balance).

Skill Training (20 mins)

Setup:

14m x 12m area, 2 setups. 6 players in each setup.

2 Mini-goals at one end and a single mini-goal at the other.

3 players between the two mini-goals lined up behind each other.

3 players at the single mini-goal (one starts in front of the goal the other 2 player behind it).

Instructions:

The ball always starts from the defender (red team in diagram) and is passed to the attacker at the opposite end (blue team in diagram).

The attacker tries to score in the two mini-goals and the defender attempts to stop them after making the pass.

Once the attacker scores or defender wins the ball the two players swap ends.

If the defender wins the ball they have 5 seconds to score in the single mini-goal at the attackers end.

Player Tasks (information to give players when they are struggling to succeed):

Can you decide how you will beat the defender and which direction you will go before going 1v1?

Can you attack the opposite side of the defender that you want to go towards first to create space for yourself?

Can you attack the defender at speed to get them off balance?

Coaches cues (things to look for when your session isn't succeeding):

When a player is taking their touch to attack the defender is it going towards the defender? (meaning they have less time to beat the defender).

When a player is attacking the defender are they close enough to the ball to be able to change direction quickly.

Progressions:

Move the two mini-goals closer.

Swap the players from each grid over so they have an opportunity to face other players.
