We play with a 1-5-4-1 formation. 3x CBs, 2x wingbacks, 1x CDM, 2x CMs, 1x CAM & 1x ST.
CBs play centrally and the midfield play as a tight, narrow diamond to allow room for the wingbacks to get forwards and support the ST who has a hold and release role.

Technical Body shape, front or back foot, movement to get on the ball, weight of pass. |
Tactical Ask players to try and recognice where this pattern could help them in a game environment. Do they understand that using this and altering the tempo could unlock a midfield/defense? |
Physical Body shape, movement off the ball and to get on the ball. Speed & urgency key. |
Psychological Support your teammates, offer encouragement and positive feedback. Help to make the team better. |
Social Call out names when you're passing, get used to communicating as you work. Banter amongst the team, can you have fun with your teammates during the session? |
A plays to B who bounces it back to A, A then send the ball forwards to C. A enters the field of play along the red arrow and looks to play a bounce pass with C. The process repeats.
Alter the practice to work clockwise aswell as counter clockwise. Player in the middle must receive the ball in the half the player passing it is in.
CP: 1st touch, weight of pass, receive the short pass on the front foot. Accuracy with the longer pass.

Technical Heavy on the foot shape, type, side, weight of pass, body shape, receiving angle. Challenge Robert to move the ball in 2 touches max. |
Tactical As before, can players see where this might be beneficial in a game. Ask Joe if he see's wher his off the ball movement could be improved from this. |
Physical Hard work if the tempo is kept high. Does Matti understand the need for fit, active players in football? |
Psychological Luke/Liam/David - could they work on being more vocal in the game, asking for the ball and being more brave to get on to it quicker and keep it safer? |
Social Challenge players to tell each other they trust them when passing the ball, vocally, and try to boost confidence across the squad. |
B passes to A from where C is standing and makes a run forwards to receive a bounce pass from A as shown. A sends the ball long to C as B makes a diagonal run across to play a bounce pass with C, when C receives the ball back he looks to open out and play in to A as he's made a run forwards and B takes As place. This switch over takes place with C as when the pattern finishes.
Ask players to try and receive on the half turn, be positive, get a good weight of pass and play as quickly as possible while still being accurate.

Physical Can Matti and Liam try to work harder to win the ball back. Keep the ST marked between them and not allow him to turn and shoot. |
Psychological Can Joe work on only offering positive feedback to teammates. Can Adi try to give instructions to enthuse and improve his teammates. |
Social As a coach, can I try and be more fun and offer more support to all players to get the most out of them. |
Oranges play as a tight diamond in the middle. CDM initiates play at the back by passing into the CMs and CAM depending on who’s available. They then attempt to get the ST as a target player. If the ball is played into the ST the CAM and CMs are allowed to push forwards and support the attack.
Pinks play as a chunked 1-4-4-1-1, so have 2x CBs, 2xCMs and a CAM. If the pinks win the ball can they play as quickly as they can to the CAM who is in the scoring zone with the orange CDM.
Offsides are dictated by an area as marked out. If the ball goes out, the orange CDM initiates play again, the pink CAM doesn’t pressure the ball to start, but can attempt to win it if the CMs or CAM plays back to the CDM. The orange CDM can attempt to block or win the ball from the pinks as they try to get it to their CAM.
Challenge: Can players in the midfield diamond be brave and get on the ball as much as possible, can they try to occupy one of the three area’s shown by the inverted-Y at all times and can they recognise when to play quickly and safely and be patient until they can trigger their attack.
