SESSION SET-UP: Specific Principle Practice - Defending the Box from Wide
4 x 4 mins + 1:30 mins rest (24 mins)
1-4-3-3 vs 1-4-3-3 (Def – 1-4-3, Att – 1-3-3)
The attacking team starts from goalkeeper, a midfielder can drop into an unopposed zone to receive and carry out. From there, they will try to score from wide (x2 goals). Every 3 1st contacts for defending team, they score. They also score through 3 goals. At the beginning of each phase, the back 4 reset to marked line.

Block 2 (4 mins) DETAILS – Defending Wide before Box.
When the ball is wide, opposite FB tucks in line with 6 yard box. Underlaps are passed on to CB until offside, leaving the ‘8’ to block any cut inside. Other midfielder compact by being ball-side and goal-side.
Coaching Point
1v1 Defending. Awareness. Hips facing away
WHAT-IF?
Underlap – CB follows. Cut inside – ‘8’ marked space.

Block 3 (4 mins) DETAILS – Defend Crosses / Cut-Backs
Back 4 – FB is 1v1, 2 CBs and opposite FB stay a yard deeper than the ball, inline with front post, between front and pen-spot and behind pen spot
Midfield – Two deepest midfielders go deep to pen spot. Highest midfielder comes inline with front post on edge of box. Creating a 3-2-1 shape, to force more play wide.
Coaching Point – Emergency Defending – Hips face away to hook. Body on line for blocks.

Block 1 (4 mins) DETAILS – Force Wide from Midfield
The opposite side ‘8’ presses their ‘6’ and the near-side ‘8’ slides down to sit inside their ‘8’, the defending ‘6’ slides across the opposite ‘8’, whilst screening the pass to striker.
