Screen 1

Principe of play: Breaking Lines (from Goal Kick Build Up Play.)

Type of session: Specific Practise into Small Sided Game. (25 mins)

Working from 11 a side: 1-4-2-3-1 (reds) V 4-4-2 (Blues)

Specific Practise: (10 mins)

Reds: 1-4-2-1 V 1-4-2

Split into 3 blocks:

Block 1: Unopposed with Mannequins building in passing patterns & breaking lines combinations (3 mins)

Block 2: Semi opposed, opposition players now move around in relation to the ball (2 mins)

Block 3: opposed, opposition can now tackle (3 mins)

2 mins dedicated to moving equipment off pitch and speaking with players before moving into Small Sided Game.

Session structure:

Problem 1: Opposition make an attempt to lock us in during build up from the back.

Solution 1: apply the passing patterns & combinations to break out of a high press either by playing through the opposition into central areas or using full backs to play around the opposition.

Players: 15 Players

Area Size: Half Pitch

Scoring System:

Reds: 2x wide mini goals to score into representing 2 wide players as well as a central mini goal to aim for.

Blues: 1 central 11 a side goal to aim for.

Roles & Responsibilities: Centre backs brace to get on the ball from goalkeeper, Midfielders looking to get in between opposition players to receive split breaking line passes, Full Backs ready to receive out wide & high, striker in position for when we break out to receive the ball & score.

Coaching Intervention: mainly terminal blocks, walkthrough, some concurrent if there are visible things going wrong in regard to the pictures that I want to see.

Ball Rolling Time: slightly lower as want to get the passing patterns & combinations out first (will be higher in SSG)

Physical Demands on Players: will be lower as the beginning is unopposed, to partially opposed to ensure the players understand how to break lines.

Coaching Strategy: Coach the in possession team, Manage opposition, have a plan for transition.

Pitch Geography: Higher emphasis on this as trying to build in passing patterns to play out from the back in a specific way, in relation to the problems caused by opposition.

Information: Tactical in terms of build up play and positional movements/rotations, as well as technical as really important the speed of pass, control of pass is correct in order for build up to be successful.

Challenges: Can we get the players playing off minimal touches if and when possible to allow the players to play through or around a press.

Condition: Environment = half pitch and 3 goals to score into to play out the back successfully.

Key Coaching Points:

Ball Speed of pass

- Backfoot to receive the ball to play forwards

- Front foot receive = bounce back pass

- Body shape to receive pass

- Breaking lines passes, through 2 defenders or build up around opposition, also over opposition into striker. ( 3 types of FAW Breaking Lines)

- Coach what is happening "on the ball" (player with the ball), "around the ball" (the closest players and their movements in relation to breaking lines and playing out from the back.), "away from the ball" (in relation to the furthest players can they still be in a supportive position, E.G = opposite full back high and wide for switch of play, striker making runs in behind or to come short.)

Screen 2

Small Sided Game: (15 mins)

Problem 1: opposition press high man for man.

Solution 1: use the passing patterns from specific practise to break opposition lines, due to a high man for man press - can we try and play “around” the opposition” utilising our full backs and pushing the closest midfielder a little wider with striker making penetrative runs into wide spaces and opposite midfielder and full back can attack the box from this passage of play. If not can we attempt to be brave and play "through" our holding midfielders. And also have the option of playing "Over" the press into striker making runs or our full backs going higher into space forcing the opposition backwards to defend closer to their goal.

Problem 2: Opposition drop off and focus on defending the goal.

Solution 2: How can we use our passing patterns to still play through that - big encouragement for Centre Backs to now step in with the ball to create 3v2 overload in midfield and have our 10 push their centre back right back to allow for that space to then combine and play forwards.

Block 3: Free Play.

Session Structure:

Players: 16 (blues get added in 1 GK becomes 8v8.)

Area Size: Half Pitch

Scoring System: 2 goals end to end for both teams to score in.

Physical Demands: higher due to it being a Game scenario, intensity wants to be high.

Ball Rolling Time: higher, players have had the specific practise on the different build up types - now can they transfer that into a small sided game therefore need high ball rolling time to execute the solution to the problem.

Roles & Responsibilities:

Coaching Interventions: a lot of concurrent interventions - seeing what is happening during the session, coaching process intervention - stopping the session and coaching either a mistake, or an alternative option on how to break lines.

Coaching Strategy: Coach the in possession team, Manage opposition, have a plan for transition.

Same overall session structure as before in specific practise only now in a game format, with now more opportunities for players to work on principle of play within a game environment.

Coaching Points:

- can we utilise the technical coaching points to play out and break lines successfully (4B'S: Ball speed, Body shape, Backfoot, Breaking Lines)

- can we have tactical rotations and movements to combine with passing patterns to break lines and play forwards against opposition.

- FAW Breaking lines Principle Of Play Key Points: Ply Through, Play Around, Play over.

- Can the players utilise the key concepts of "on the ball, around the ball, away from the ball" - that is coached within specific practise. If not I will step in and re-coach/reemphasise this to the players.
