CREATING WIDE 2v1s
DECISION MAKING BETWEEN THE LINES
Once between the lines with a ‘side on’ body shape, the winger will have three options:
1) Receive side on with time and space and drive forward with the ball under control to commit defenders and free up a teammate.
2) Receive side on and link play directly with the 9 to continue to progress forward.
3) Set the ball towards the 8.

Welsh way
Understanding when and how to combine, create and finish in the attacking third of the pitch
Set up and rules
· The area is equivalent to half a pitch with a line marking out the 'final third of the pitch.
· The Reds set up in a 1-3-5-2 formation but without the back 3
· The Blues set up in a 1-4-3-3 formation but without the front 3
· If the Red team score its worth as many points as there are players in the final third, i.e., if they have all 7 players in the final third then it’s worth 7 points.
· If the Blue team score it’s worth the same amount as what’s left on the clock, i.e., if theirs 4 seconds left then it’s worth 4 points.

Block 1
Using front 4 rotations to create chances
Solution 1
Using different patterns: once the left wide 8 has the ball the right winger runs inside and the right 9 drops in. 8 underlap once the winger has the ball or if the winger is cutting inside the 8 overlaps. Different rotations and changes of positions to create space against a man-to-man press.
Block 2
Using cutbacks to create chances in and around the 6-yard box
Solution 2
Overlaps and underlaps from the 8s to create space down in the channel with support from the 6 underneath the winger to provide a switch if key to gain numerical advantage in the wide channel
What ifs
What if we can’t beat the player or get the overlap can the 6 step up and provide a bounce pass with the winger and then the winger can spin off in towards the t zone of the pitch creating cut back chances.

Block 1
Attacking the wide area to produce goal scoring crosses
Solution 1
4 plays into the winger who goes 1v1 with the full back backed by the underlapping runs of the 8s to provide a problem for the wide player and supported underneath by the 6 to create a deeper crossing position into the box. Look for crossing opportunities and the wingers will be told to cross once beat the player. However, the strikers are going to stay high and central and provide the goal scoring threat in the box with the opposite winger moving into the back post with the opposite 8 joining.
Block 2
Attacking and producing threat in the middle channel
Solution 2
This time the 4 can come out of the centre circle by carrying the ball forward. The wingers start of wide and continue to make diagonal third man runs across the defensive line. With the 10 dropping in at the top of the midfield. This creates a 5v3 in the middle and the 2 CM split to the edge of the middle channel with the 6 splitting
