3rd Man Run

Session:

Quick passing combination drill with the starting player making a run from deep to finish

Coaching Points

The player who is playing as the Striker should be focusing on passing first time on a bounce pass - To add detail in, have the Striker practice turning out after their pass.

Player who starts the passing pattern needs to time their run to allow them to strike the ball first time - go through with players how change in acceleration can allow this.

On the finish, get the technical detail in with the players, getting the knee over the ball and using laces to strike the ball, make sure players are aware of their body shape and how it affects the height of the ball.

3rd Man Game Based

Session Plan

Players will look to combine in the 3rd man run during Game session, the ball will always start with the team in possession- either with the deepest player or played in by the coach. Look to set up a receiving zone to support players positional runs.

Pictures to Create:

 1. When the CM receives the ball, look to the ST to spin out to either overload the front line or to drag the CB away to give the CM space to run into - Should the CB not follow the ST, this will allow them to receive the ball back on the half-turn to attack themselves.

2. Should the CB not step onto the ST and the CM go man for man, moving the ball wide should be the option, this will allow the ST to drift across for a 2v1 or stay centrally for a 1v1 for wingers.

3. Should the Opposition low-block out the team, the CM can carry the ball forward, with this Wingers can give supporting angles which may allow the 1v1s. Carrying may allow the CM to shoot or hold the ball till the CM Steps out which can allow the CM to find a gap to receive and have an overlapping winger or play inside to the ST.
