Credit goes to Paul Keigher and Scott Jenkins for the basis of this lesson plan. The concept is working on defensive stalling techniques and zonal defending. Utilizing shape and number system. Concentration on GK and position 2, 4, 5, & 3.

General notes:
Defending Block, focus on body position and delaying the attacker
Aims and objectives:
How quickly can defender get to the attacker, delay the attacker and keep him in the top half. Use the skills just been coached, run fast, slow down, side on, weight on back foot, don't stop too close to the ball
Organisation and setup:
Create a grid of rectangles 12ft x 6ft, with a 6ft half way line. Put players in pairs attackers v defenders - the attacker dribbles the ball in, the defender must close him down as quickly as possible, using the technical skills for delaying and hold the attacker in the top half for as long as possible. The defender scores points if he / she keeps the attacker in the top half:
1 point for 3 seconds
2 points for 5 seconds
3 points for 10 seconds
If the attacker gets past the defender they must dribble the ball over the line and keep it under control - they get 1 point.
If the defender makes a tackle they score a point if they dribble it over the line and keep it under control.
Swap attackers and defenders so that everyone has a go
Coaching factors and outcomes:
Defenders close down the attacker as quickly as possible, getting into shape quick, Bend legs, low centre of gravity and in the correct shape and be active on their toes so they can move quickly. They score more points if they delay the attacker and keep them in the top half than tey do if they tackle and dribble the ball away.
Adaption:
Increase area to give the attacker more choices, making it more difficult for the defender
Make it 2v1 in favour of attackers - can the defender delay for as long as possible
Make it 2 v 2 in favour of attackers, with a second defender coming from the back after 3 seconds
make it 2 v 1 in favour of defenders
Coaching points#1
- Close down the attacker quickly
- Get into correct shape
- Do not dive in - delay for as long as possible
Coaching points#2
- Can they show them to a side line (choose left or right as a challenge)
- Can they show the attacker onto their weaker foot

Social Team activity, fun arrival activity, start to work as a team as more defenders join the middle |
General notes:
Defending Block, focus on players in the middle
Aims and objectives:
Arrival activity, players must get from one side to the other without losing their bib. Can the defender in the middle delay and slow the attackers before stealing their bib.
Organisation and setup:
Use the 7 a side penalty area and setup two safe ones either side. Bibs tucked into the back of their shorts, 1 player in the middle all other players start in the same safe zone. They must then run to the other safe zone whilst staying inside the playing area. The defender in the middle must try and steal the bib from the back of the attacker. If he steals the bib the attacker becomes a defender
Coaching factors and outcomes:
This game encourages the defender to make decisions, run into the correct area on the pitch to delay and then get into the correct body position. Coaching needs to focus on the defender, but also encourage the attackers to change speed, run fast / slow when needed, use all the pitch area and use feints and dummies to get passed the defender.
Adaption:
Add a 'half way line' - if the defender can keep the attacker in the high half for 3 seconds they get a point, 5seconds 2 points, 10 seconds 3 points etc.
Increrase size of pitch to create more room
Instead of using bibs use balls and dribble across
Add goals at the side of the pitch for defenders to pass through and get points
Add players at the sides to pass through the game
Coaching points#1
- Defender runs into position as quickly as possible
- Start to slow down when you get close to the attacker to slow them down
- Get into correct body shape
- Try to slow the defender down and don't let him pass
- when he/she makes a mistake steal their bib
Coaching points#2
- When you start to slow down:
Go side on
Start to take small steps
Weight on back foot
Stay on toes
Delay the attacker as long as possible

Each player is in their own gride and cannot cross over.
Defense is in the middle four (2/4/5/3).
Defenders are working on their pressure, cover, balance
Offense (7/6/8/11) trying to get ball through defense with pass.
Each pass across results in a point for offense.
Keys: positioning, talking, keeping eye on ball

General notes:
Defending Block, focus on coaching defenders - manage attackers
Aims and objectives:
Put the coaching points into practice, the focus is on defending
Organization and setup:
Setup a full size match and let them play. Encourage all the coaching points from the practice.
Adaption:
Set challeneges for the players
When our team does not have the ball
- defender: Don't let the other teams player get in between you and your goal keeper (stay goalside)
- midfielder: Run back quickly to help your defender
- attacker: Can I stand in space (no Kum by Haw) so we can attack quickly when we win the ball back
Coaching points#1
- Close down the attacker quickly
- Body shape and position
- Delay attackers so that your teamates can come back and help
- Delay attackers and look for the right time to make a tackle (don't stab at the ball)
Coaching points#2
- Can they show them to a side line, away from the goal
- Can they show the attacker onto their weaker foot
Field A is a flat formation and field B is a diamon formation. Position 4 is the def center back and position 5 is the attacking center back.

General notes:
Defending Block, focus on body position
Aims and objectives:
Focus on technical aspect of body position. Side on, weight on back foot, on toes so can move quickly
Organisation and setup:
Create a grid of squares 6ft x 6ft. Put players in pairs, each player has a bib in back of shorts. They have to steal the bib from their friend, but are not allowed outside their square. First to 3 wins, then swap payers around.
Coaching factors and outcomes:
Get the players into the correct body position, side on, on their toes with a low centre of gravity with legs bent so they can manouvre quickly. Help them to learn to get into a good body position that stops them diving in to tackles and delay attackers, whilst their teamates run back to assist or until the opposition makes a mistake and they can take the ball.
Adaption:
1 player has a bib and tries to get from one side to the other
Can the defender delay them and steal the bib
use a ball, can the attacker get from one side to the other - can the defender delay them
Coaching points#1
- stand side on
- Low centre of gravity
- Bend kness
- stand on toes
Coaching points#2
- Look for the right time to steal bib
- change front foot from left to right
