Specific practice - defending an overload

sub principles:

recognise opposition movement 

press quickly 

protect the middle

leave the furthest players


challenges, conditions & targets:

block 1

if ball is won in central channel = 2 points

if ball is won in wide channel = 1 point

block 2 

if ball is won in wide channel = 2 points 

if ball is won in central channel = 1 point


dimensions - half pitch (corners cut off + midfield and final third split and 3 channels)


block 1 - defending the overload centrally

block 2 - defending the overload in wide areas 

block 3 - opposition have freedom


No. of players - 7 outfield players + 1 GK (focus team - red team) 7 outfield players (opposition - blue team

Focus team (red team)

1-4-2-1 (1-4-2-3-1 - removing wingers + striker)

opposition (Blue team)

1-3-3 (4-3-3 - removing back 4)

tactical solutions:

for 8/10 to press once the first play receives the ball, while blocking the passing lane to the wide players

for the 6 to block the passing lane to the striker

for the 4/5 to pinch the striker

for the 2/3 to delay and follow the player on the ball by blocking the passing lane and allowing the player on the ball to come towards

technical solutions:

to focus on triggers

to be able block passing lanes 

to be able to sit narrow with teammates 

to be able to delay
