Session built on areas which have arisen from the 1st pre-season games at the weekend.
Reserve grade - Lack of defensive shape and being left open even when in possesion - not recovering as a unit
First Grade - Chance creation centrally
Both grades still need to be more confident with the ball under pressure

Warm Up Session
- Breakdown of Session /Recap of Weekend Games
- FIFA 11
- Passing Practice Rondo (above)
5v2 (if 8 players have two in the middle)
Working of 90 seconds on and then changing the middle two players
Rules
- Maximum of 3 touch
Main Coaching Point
- Defending players can they stop forward passes and not get split
- Middle possession player receive in a position to play forward and not deeper than the first defensive line
- Side Possession players can ballside player be outside and level with the first defending player - ask the players why?

Stopping passing lanes being open and orientating towards the ball (working with the middle group of players primarily)
If there is an extra player then it would be a white in the middle area to facilitate angles to pass from
Overview
Whites look to retain the ball and pass from end to end
Ball must stay on the ground unless playing a diagnal ball to the opposite side
Coaching Points
- Defending player in top end not allowing forward passes
- Middle players pressure, cover, balance
- Middle players pressing on wide player to stop the switch of play
- If a white in the middle then how do they deal with this - what happens if defender comes out to stop the pass?

Two Part Defensive Drill
Working build up play and defensive shape against an attacking team
Part 1.
Coach plays into one of the reds who work the ball into the CB, to the fullback, into the CDM to either play forward into the mini goal or to the fullback pushing forward (red line). Blues provide a passive press within a 3:1 shape (4231) who must be within 2 grids of the ball. If the ball is given away then blues can attack. Defence must get beyond the poles to make realisitc
Progression ball played back to the other CB (black line)
Coaching Points
- Defence not flat and fullbacks level and outside of the first pressing player
- Re-orientation once ball is played to a fullback where the non ball-side player tucks across to make a back 3 within the 3 central zones
- CDM start high and come back to receive once the ball is played into the fullback
Part 2.
Once the ball is played into the mini goals, or coach, then blues immediately attack against reds in a 5 v 6 (coach used if needed)
- Defence narrow and compress to within 2 vertical grids of the ball
- CDM avoiding being dragged out wide
- CDM orientating towards the ball
- Positioning of the GK to deter balls in and behind

Functional Shooting
Session about movement of the front three and the run from the #9 to finish
As follows:
- coach plays into player (a)
- when this is done (b) drops back to receive (facing forward) and plays a ball for the striker (c) to run onto (must get to the flat marker on the drop)
- (c) has three touches to finish
Rotation is players following their pass. Go through twice and then swap sides
Coaching Points
- (b) drops with urgency, receives, on their back foot facing forward
- Position of (c) puts themselves in a position to see both the ball player and their opponent
- Run of (c) is angled and what is the trigger to start the run (b - receiving on and facing forward)
- Detail of the pass - is it straight or angled?

SSG Game
If there are odd numbers then have one joker within the middle grid who plays for the team in possession. If there are more than 4v4 (plus joker) within the middle then have two side bouncers limited to 2 touch
Focus of the session is twofold
1. getting players between the lines and facing forward to be able to play into the striker
2. getting support runners forward
Overview
- Coach plays into the middle and players there look to combine for three passes and play into their striker
- Once the ball goes into the striker then upto 2 attackers can support and one recovering defender
- If the ball goes out at any point then everything re-sets
Intense game so play for 5 x 3 min with 1 min recovery in between
Rules
- 3 pass rule required to progress the ball to the attacking area is negated should there be an interception (makes it more realistic)
- If we arent getting success with the ball being played in then make the defender in the defending zone become live on the attackers first touch
- Once in the attacking zone then there is 10 seconds to get a shot off if time expires then it restarts from the coach
- Poles denote offside line
Coaching Points
- making sure that if player (a) has the ball then the corresponding side player is pushing higher whilst the diagnal player is coming shorter (something which we didnt do very well in the game - highlighted by arrows)
- that the non in possession (a) player is no deeper than the first pressing player - outside and level - in order to give angles passing option
- That the attacker is always positioned to be able to see opponent and the ball carrier
- Choice of the ball into the striker, can it be in the channel as per shooting, or, if defender tight then into their feet

Overview
Overview
Session being used as both a recovery and to build upon areas which we need to work on stemming from Sundays game. Structure of the session will be as follows:
Warm Up
- Grades combined
- FIFA 11
- Session Frame(s)
- Rondo
Reserves Session
- Based around the defensive structure and horizontal compactness of the Back 4 and 2 CDM
- This comes from the game on Sunday highlighting that we have too many indivduals within those positons and that we are nowhere near a collective group in respect to defensive shape. Something which we must tighten up within. We simply cannot camp on the edge of our own box we must offer a goal threat and the only way of being able to do this is to increase our defensive knowledge
- Session will be a disguised phase of play which includes a number of differing elements to it so that we keep players engaged
First Grade Session
- Based on improvement of central combination to gain access to the attacking third and create goalscoring opportunities
Problem Analysis
what - lack of combination player meaning that we didnt fashion enough goalscoring opportunties centrally
who - primarily 6,7,8,10 secondary 9
where - top of mid third moving into attacking third
when - secure possesion playing forward
why - proximate causes
- 6/8 not retaining possession and forcing balls rather than having their head up and looking for the free player
- 7/10 not being within areas to receive and play forward - finding themselves on same vertical line as the 6/8 meaning balls too straight
- 9 not giving enough of a vertical threat for us
- lack of movement, moving into an area and remaining there even when obvious we cannot play through
- lack of third man runs to create spaces for other players
- too slow ball movement
