Set up: Mark four spaces about 8 to 10 yards above the penalty area label them as 2, 4, 5 and 3. Set up four stations to serve the ball from near midfield. You can label them A, B, C and D.
Exercise: Same as the first exercise but in this case stations A and D are in high wide positions. The ball will start with players B or C. They have the option to try and beat the back line or play to A or D forcing the wide backs to shift out and defend
Coaching points: make sure the players start with the proper body shape once they know where the ball will be served from. Decision making on who should stepand why. You want to avoid two players challenging the same ball. Make sure the covering players are moving to the proper areas. If the ball is played to A or D make sure the other defenders dont over shift and leave the middle open.

basic back four covering
Set up: Mark four spaces about 8 to 10 yards above the penalty area label them as 2, 4, 5 and 3. Set up four stations to serve the ball from near midfield. You can label them A, B, C and D.
Exercise: Aplayer from A, B, C or D serves a ball towards the back line. The proper player from the back line steps up to intercept the ball while the other three players take up appropriate covering positions. In this case the ball is served from D with the #4 stepping forward to intercept. 2, 5, and 3 are moving into covering positions.
Coaching points: make sure the players start with the proper body shape once they know where the ball will be served from. Decision making on who should stepand why. You want to avoid two players challenging the same ball. Make sure the covering players are moving to the proper areas.
Variations: start by playing balls that are not difficult to handle just so the players get their movements in sync. Add one touch clearances. Add targets to clear towards. Add the goal keeper behind.
