Description

This session is based on the Ireland vs Serbia 24th March 2021.

The first part of the session works on goalkeeper distribution as I believe the Irish Goalkeeper distribution on the night could have been utilised better. There were times in the game where he decided to go long when he had clear and viable options to play from the back, in fact the second Serbia goal came directly from a goal kick of which could have been played out from the back.

The second part of the session focus on defending, I believe Ireland will be extremely disappointed in the manner they conceded the three goals. Ireland conceded the first two goals from not defending the space and the third from not defending the area.

This session plan works on the defensive unit, defending the goal, defending the space, defending the area, and the goalkeeper positioning within that unit,  whilst been able to communicate clear and effective instructions to his defenders.

Defending is a collective effort, important that the players understand their roles within the defensive unit. At times the Ireland team decision making and communication was poor in decisive moments, this may also be due to the fact the players playing in the defensive roles were not used to playing with each other, particularly in front of debutante goalkeeper who seemed a little hesitant at times, this session allows the opportunity for the defensive unit work together in small sided game scenario to further develop their understanding.

Handling and footwork

Method:

  •  Technical to functional Warm up - Goalkeepers work in 3 gates 3 yards wide, two servers to work GK with high ball catches, working off left and right foot jumps. Gk catch the high ball alternatively and immediately after high catch adjust their feet into the middle gate for head height half volley. 4 sets of 6. 2 right, 2 left.
  • Progression- Goalkeeper in middle gate receives second ball to feet and takes touch to pass through initial gate.

Coaching Points:

  • High jump off the floor (left and right foot)(high knee).
  • Quality distribution back to server.
  • Quick feet through second gate.
  • Dynamic set position-shape and timing - find rhythm timing of the server.
  • Shape of hand's and body when receiving.

Method:Playing out from the back, developing the goalkeeper's passing ability. Set up as shown with 3 cones(the distance of which between can be modified depending on the ability or challenge you want to set players. 1 player on each cone, player takes two touches using both feet, from the 3 serves.

Progression- Find the odd man out two balls in play, find the player without a ball can't pass back to player you received the ball from.

Method:Playing out from the backdiagonal switch 1 touch, opening body up receiving the pass and being able to distribute the ball quickly accurately and firmly to player on opposite side.Extremely important to practice to improve goalkeeper passing and distribution.

Progression: Use extra goalkeeper to apply pressure to the GK. Include shot from the edge of the box after every pass and get extra goalkeeper to follow in rebounds.

N.B. Outfield player's may also be used to play 3v2 or 5v3 possession game by simply expanding the 18yard box to the wings

Coaching Points:

  • Demand firm and accurate passes and also replicate.
  • High tempo
  • Head up be aware closing pressure, adjust feet accordingly.

    S.S.G.

    Method:(S.S.G )Small Sided Game, 5v5, 2x 18yrd boxes,

In this activity the goalkeeper has opportunity to continue perfecting playing out from the back within tight area, whilst also training all aspects of goalkeeping from shot stopping to positioning, dealing with crosses, to organising the defenders, this can be done in this scenario under the watchful eye of the goalkeeping coach who can give instant feedback and encouragement to the goalkeeper. The coaching staff in this activity will be working on three key elements:

    • Defend the Goal
    • Defend the space
    • Defend the area.

    Coaching Points: Goalkeeper perspective

  • Protect the goal (shot stopping)
  • Working as sweeper
  • Dealing with mid/low crosses/cutbacks
  • Distribution (Boot and Hands)
  • Organisation defenders distance relationship
  • Clarity around communication
  • Recognising threats

    Defend the Goal

Method:Defend the Goal, Out of Possession (O.O.P) recognising threat, the player in front has not been closed down. The goalkeeper must adjust his position in the goal to make save, longer shots such as the above. My preference is for a goalkeeper is to be closer to his line as this will afford the goalkeeper better reaction time. Clear and concise communication with defenders awareness of threat from transitional elements of play I.P to O.O.P.

    Coaching Points:

    • Protect the goal
    • Movement back towards goal
    • Set position
    • Clear and concise information to defenders
    • Recognising threats
    • Goalkeeper Positioning in transitional elements

    Defend the Space

Method: Defend the space, Goalkeeper playing sweeper role. Defenders keep high line and goalkeeper decision making is crucial to holding his advanced position in the goal. In the attached diagram the player in possession has been closed down and fronted up, making it extremely difficult for this player to shoot from long distance, which allows the goalkeeper to hold advanced position to possibly sweep any potential through balls. Working within S.S.G. the goalkeeper afforded the opportunity to work with his defenders to build a trusted relationship which it requires to effectively carry this out in games.

    Coaching Points:

    • Goalkeeper playing sweeper role
    • Encouraging defenders to hold their line and close players down
    • Goalkeeper  connection with the team through instruction
    • Front foot, quick feet
    • Quick decision making
    • Awareness of changing threats
    • Awareness positioning within the goal
    • Sweeping

    Defend the area

Method:Defend the Area,  Players to stop/block crosses and shots in and around box,  players clear the ball into areas of the pitch that give defenders time to regroup and cover the danger. Goalkeeper starting positions to deal with crosses/ cutbacks aswell as dealing with potential headers or shots distribution to T2A is to be considered. Communication with defenders in order to make the best decisions.

    Coaching Points:

  • Protect the goal
  • Starting position crosses/shots
  • Clear and concise information to defenders
  • Recognising threats
  • Quick distribution to T2A
  •

    Defend the Goal

    Defend the space
