Description

Session Objective: This session has been designed to help players both attack and defend in 1 v 1 duels with confidence, knowledge and success. 

Level: U9-12 (can also be used for U13+)

Principles of Play:

Part 1: Warm-Up: Skill Grid (Engage: 10-15 mins)

  • This is an unopposed (no tackling allowed) warm-up drill that gets players moving, dribbling and performing close ball skills. 
Part 2: Practice: Gladiator Arena 1 v 1 (Educate: 15-20 mins)

  • This is an opposed (tacking allowed) practice that gives players plenty of opportunity to develop their 1 v 1 skills. 
Part 3: Game: Numbers Duel (Explore: 25-30 mins) 

  • This is a classic small-sided game that gives players the chance to explore their 1 v 1 skills (attacking and defending) in game-realistic scenarios. Players will be able to also combine with teammates to beat defenders in 1 v 1 situations.

Warm Up - Skills Grid (10 mins)

Overview/Set Up:

  • Set-up a 20 x 20 playing area. Divide the area into 4 smaller areas 10 x 10 (see diagram). 
  • Divide players into 3 (ideally) even groups, putting them in different coloured bibs. Then place players into the 4 areas, 1 player from each group in each smaller box. 
  • Each players has a football to dribble with.    

Game Rules/Points:

  • Players start by performing simple Ball Mastery Skills (see YouTube Video for ideas). 
  • Then coach will call any of the following instructions: "Explode!" – players must run with the ball at speed, exploiting the space around them e.g., finding gaps/openings to run into. "Tricks!" – players are to perform a simple but effective trick as they dribble e.g., step-over, body feints, quick turns and twists etc (see YouTube video for ideas). "Change!" – players must quickly leave their ball and find someone else's ball in the same area. "Drive!" – players must perform a driving run (with the ball) by being able to travel around the larger box i.e., they must leave their small box.  "Skills!" – players will return to performing their Ball Mastery Skills. 'Dribble!' all players must quickly dribble their ball and stop it on a sideline. Players must maintain full control of their ball, not allowing the ball to runaway from them.   
  • Coach is to mix up his/her instructions.  

Work to Rest Ratio:

  • Each round is 3 mins with 1-2 min rest. Play 2 rounds.    

Coaching Points:

  • Can players maintain full control of their ball the whole time. 
  • Can players dribble using both feet and different parts of their foot. 
  • Can players avoid collisions with other players by scanning. 
  • Can players dribble at speed with directness and good balance. 

Progressions:

  • The coach passes balls (along the ground only!) into the playing area attempting to strike players on their ankle. This will encourage players to scan, becoming more aware of the surroundings.
