Specific Practice
Rationale
For this practice we will be focusing on breaking lines player round through or over. For this specific practice we will be focusing on the blue team in possession of the ball. The topic will be breaking lines. The blue team will be playing in a 3-4-3 formation while the red team will be playing in a 4-4-2 formation. For this specific practice we will be taking out the left and right CB for the blue team and for the red team we will take out the two ST's.
Blue team
In possession: Breaking the line in the defensive third against the press.
Out of possession: Defensive transition against a quick counter attack
Red Team
In possession: Transition to being in possession and counter attacking quickly to score goals (10 seconds to score when the ball has been won).
Out of possession: Defending the line
Problem 1: Press
What if: Mid-Block
Solution: Using the double pivot to play around the high press to break the midfield line
Position:
ST- Will play as a false 9 in order to play between the lines and use the space created by the CM
RW- Will make runs in behind
LW- Will look to make runs in behind
CM- (Key Player) Will drop in to the backline to create depth and space
CM- (Key Player) Will move into a holding midfield position but will be on a different line to the CB to give them space to drive into
LWB- Will look to create a diamond shape in the wide areas allowing the CB to play direct to the winger
RWB- Will look to create a diamond shape in the wide areas allowing the CB to play direct to the winger
CB- (Key Player) Will look to drive into space created by the midfielders
GK- Will look to play to the CB or one of the CM
Playing out from the back
Positions:
ST- Drops in to create one two or space for LW
RW- Looks to receive direct from CB
LW- Comes into centre to exploit
CM- (Furthest from the ball) Tucks into space
CM- (Closest to the ball) Drops into False CB
LWB- Looks to overlap
RWB- Drops to support CB
CB- To play direct to winger
GK- Looks to play out from back
Psychological
Players will need to use their problem solving skills in order to break down the opposing team in their mid-block shape.
Physical
Players will need to work hard out of possession to chase the ball in the defensive transition.
Social
Players will need to communicate their movement with each other in order to exploit the space created. Players will also be given leadership roles within the team.
Technical
Players in possession of the ball will need to deliver quality passes in order to be able to break the line.
Tactical
Players in the double pivot and false 9 position will need to think of their movement in order to create space to break the line.
