Warm Up (10 mins)

Description :

> 25x25 area.

> split the team into two even groups.

> players inside with a ball.

> players outside without a ball.

> players inside area must dribble with ball & play a pass to outside player.

> outside player takes a touch & passes ball back into inside player.

> inside player must turn with the ball & dribble to another outside player.

> players work for 90 seconds & then swap with outside players.

Progressions :

> challenge players to use both feet when taking touch, dont always look to use stronger foot.

> make area smaller if you feel players have too much space to take touch, by bringing the area in tighter then this will let player focus on first touch more to ensure it is close to them in tight area.

> remind players to open up their body so when they take a touch they can see the player passing, the ball & the space they want to move into.

> players should be encouraged to take their touch with their back foot, which will allow them to dribble away quicker with front foot.

> enthisise how important checking their shoulder is.

Can we communicate when we want the ball?

Why do we check our shoulders?

Why is it important to open up our body?

Why do we take the touch with our back foot?

What part of the foot should take the touch?

Activity 1 (10 mins)

Description :

> 10x10 box area.

> group of 4.

> 2 balls between group.

> one player starts in middle of the box with the other 3 players on a cone around the outside.

> player inside box will receive a pass from one of the players with a ball, when he has received the pass they must then turn on the ball & pass out to the spare player who doesnt have a ball.

> when inside player has made his pass, he must then go & look to receive the next pass off the outside player with a ball at his feet.

> everytime an outside player plays a pass inside the box, they must then run to the spare cone who has nobody at it.

Progression :

> if players find the drill too difficult then start with 1 ball & let them choose who they can pass to next.

> if players are comfortable with drill then we can look to make the box bigger or even challenge the player to only turn with their less preferred foot.

> remind players to always check their shoulders to see where the next available pass is.

> body positioning is vital, if body is open then this will make the turn & pass easier as we are already facing the direction we would like the ball to go.

> players must look to take their touch & pass the ball with the inside of their foot.

> drill can be made easier if players communicate & let the inside player know where they are around the box.

Can we communicate & help our teammate?

Why do we need to check our shoulders?

When do we check our shoulders?

How can we make the next pass easier for ourselves & all in the one motion?

Activity 2 (10 mins)

Description :

> goals 15 yards away from middle pole.

> player on middle pole/cone without a ball.

> players with ball, 10/15 yards away from middle player.

> ball each for players in the line ready to pass.

> player A passes ball into player B who will angle his body to turn his pole.

> when player B has turned, they must then try to score a goal in the mini goal.

> player A will then follow his pass & move to the pole & wait to receive the next pass.

> make sure players try to turn both ways & shoot with both feet.

Progression :

> when players get use to drill & confident with drill we can then bring the pole closer to the players, so when player A passes to B he can then apply some pressure onto B but cannot tackle.

> encourage players to open body in direction they want to take ball.

> remind players to look over shoulder so they can see where the pole & goals are before taking their touch.

> get players into good habits by asking them to move off their pole as if it was a defender.

> make sure players are taking touch with inside of their back foot to allow them to run onto the ball & finish with the front foot.

Can we check our shoulders?

Can we move off our pole as we would in a game?

Why do we move off our pole?

How can we ensure to have a first time strike at goal?

Game (20 mins)

7v7 Game.

our end game should try to incoporate what we have worked on during the session, make sure to ask players questions to let them work it out for themselves rather than us telling them what to do :

Can we communicate when we want the ball?

Why do we check our shoulders?

When do we check our shoulders?

Why is it important to open up our body?

Why do we take the touch with our back foot?

What part of the foot should take the touch?
