Screen 1

Adaptations (Progressions & Regressions): 2x 4 minute blocks with 1 minute rest between blocks.

Pitch area size tapered width in between the side lines and 18 yard box.

Length upto halfway line.

Working with the reds OUT OF POSSESSION.

Managing the blues in possession.

Reds working back from 1-4-3-3 (4 defenders, 2 CDMs)

Blues working back from 1-3-5-2 (3 CMs, 2 CFs)

Challenges, Conditions or Targets:

Blues are looking to score in the main goal. Play begins with a pass from the server player on the half way line, pass to a blue midfielder.

Reds objective is to stop either blue CFs receiving the ball in zone 14 (shaded area) and look to win possession and score by getting the ball back to the server on the halfway line.

Blues - If they can split the red CDMs in zone 14 and score, 3 goals awarded.

           - Progression for blues, can 1 blue CM dribble through zone 14 ? if so, 3 goals awarded.

Coaching points for reds:

  • Pressure on the ball (when, how, where, who)
  • If one CDM goes to pressure the ball, can the other CDM cover and become a single screen?
  • Communication (GK, Back 4, 2 CDMs... where to shift, move as a unit etc)
  • Angles and distances of support, ensure twin screen (CDMs) is close enough so that the ball does not get split through between both CDMs.
  • Out of possession remain narrow and compact, looking to win possession.
  • Track movement of the 2 CFs. Don't allow them to find gaps. Can the 10 move backwards and find the hole ?
  • Delay/deny
  • Body shape, ready to win the ball.
  • If the ball goes to the right or left blue CM, nearest red CDM pressures the ball and the other red CDM covers (screens)
  • If the reds are having lots of success, then the server is allowed to drive into midfield to create the overload.

Adaptations (Progressions & Regressions): 15 minutes including 1 minute rest midway. coaching phase and concurrant.

SSG - 9v9

Reds - 1-4-2-1-1

Blues - 1-2-4-2

Challenges, Conditions or Targets:

If reds can win the ball, can they score in 10 seconds? If 2nd GK isnt available then use a target man to find.

Blues - if you score by playing through zone 14 and are successful then your are awarded 3 goals. If you score by going around then only 1 goal.

Coaching points: same as above...

  • Can red no10 drop deep when out of possession to help support defensively and protect zone 14?
  • Can reds force blues out wide away from the central area?
  • CF drop deep when out of possession?

Coaches Review/Reflect:

I found this session very useful for current defensive problems with my u21s team. This helped to demonstrate the problems that are created in the central zone (zone 14).

I was able to highlight the requirements of the 2 CDMs and how important they are to defending that zone 14. This helped my defence to communicate with each other and provide good practice to work as a unit to cover space, screen, press the player on the ball and remain narrow and compact in a low block.

Possibly i could have used mini goals in wide areas so that the reds had other realistic options as a target due to removing the red wingers.

Also in the SSG, mini goals in the wide area would have assisted the reds with extra targets, mini goals would represent wide players and score 1 point. If reds scored past the blue GK then 3 goals awarded to give reds more incentive.
