Objective - Introduce basic positional concepts for angled defend the goal situations

Coaching Points

  • Positioning - slightly closer to near post, the angle makes it harder for striker to see far post (I will show you how to demonstrate this)
  • Footwork - Open hips and move laterally into line. Be direct - no semi-circles, no back-peddling

Game - Live Angled Strikes (15 mins)

Objective - Expose keepers to a variety of angled strikes in a fun, game-like scenario

  • Two working GKs, two servers
  • Exercise starts by GK playing to one of the servers
  • Exercise is now live, outside servers must shoot from outside of the posts (mark with flats)
  • Rebounds are live, GK must either hold ball or put it out of play before they switch to attack the other goal

  • Short, dynamic footwork - appropriate for distance (shuffle for short movements, cross-step for longer)
  • Maintain balance with short steps and use of bodyweight
  • Good handling habits on extension - positive angle, hands in front of body, fully extend (don't get elbow jammed)

Objective - Expose GKs to a variety of shot stopping scenarios in a fun, competitive, unpredictable environment

  • 1) Coach serves ball to server in grid who can score in any goal
  • 2) All keepers must be prepared and set to face shot
  • 3) Ball is not dead until a keeper has held it, or it leaves the grid

  • Low set, always following the ball and prepared for any deflection
  • Good positioning on angle - cover your near post!
