Role of 2/5

These are the rear defenders on the left and right sides of the field.

They usually play wide to protect the sides of the field. But they may assist with protecting the centre as needed.

These players will often move up and down the field and help with offensive plays.

Extremely fit as they are needed in attack and to support the defence as well.

Should be goal side of opposition winger and prevent crosses coming into the danger zone.

Attentive of the offside application

Communicate with the centre back (3/4) and defensive midfielder.(6)

When the team gets the ball widen the pitch by moving forward and down the line and overlap the wingers( 7/11) if possible.

Either provide crosses or create a 2 v1 situation and help the winger penetrate the box .

Provide more space for the midfielders to get the ball out of danger areas.
