Passing and moving drill

  • Passing and moving drill (wolf pack game):

Players in an area. Half have balls, half don't. The players who do not have a ball have to get into a space to receive a ball. The players with the ball have to carry the ball into space and find a free player. Players should be calling for the ball/passes and showing with their sticks where they want to receive the ball.

After one round of above, move onto adding a wolf pack (2/3/4 defenders who need to work together to get rid of all the balls). Once complete, repeat with diffrent defenders. Time each round. Have a set amount of balls e.g. 5 balls that defenders (the wolf pack) need to get rid out of the zone.

Other progressions:

  • Add in one or two defenders
  • Players can only pass to the same player once (have to pass to everyone).
  • Can add in gates players have to pass through or carry through.
  • How many passes can they make as a team in 1 min (could also make this two teams competing against each other).

Key points:

  • Wolf pack working together to pick off and isolate attackers.
  • Sheep (attackers) working together to pass or carry the ball into space away from defenders.

Tips:

  • Use some young leaders to work as sheep to help spread the play.
  • Could use a young leader as a wolf to help defence.
  • Make it competitive between sheep and wolfs.

Numbers game (10 mins)

Numbers game

Players are lined up in a q behind their cone. Coach calls out two numbers. The first number refers to one team and the second number refers to the other e.g. 2/1. This would make it a 2v1. Max numbers 4v4. Players have to dribble through the corner goals to score a goal (or in mini goals). Once players have completed their go, they join the back of the line.

Key coaching points:

Attack:

  • Move at angles and not straight at the defender.
  • Change direction and speed (after skill, focus on left to right which we have covered)
  • Attack down the weak side where possible (+ make space by taking left before going right)
  • Encourage passes
Defence:

  • Close down attacker
  • Stick length and step away
  • show (channel) attacker down your strong side
  • Low and side on body position
  • Use jab tackle to get opponents eyes down or when their stick comes off the ball (snake tackle)
  • Use block tackle when opponent make mistakes or get to close (road block)

Progressions/tips:

  • Add points for number of passes.
  • Teams must complete 1/2/3 passes before they can score etc.

2 v 1's

2 v 1's

  • Set players up in 3s in tackle channels. The two in possession of the ball have to try and carry or pass the ball under control into an end zone to score a point. Try and place players of similar abilities together.

Regression:

  • If players are struggling, make easier by attackers just having to make passes. Point for amount of passes e.g. 3 in a row. Or can do by time, e.g. how many passes can the pair make in 30 seconds.
  • Make it into a 3 v 1.

Progression:

  • Play is started with a pass from defenders with attackers posting up towards the ball (coming towards the ball).

Key points:

Attack:

  • Try to attack down your defenders non stick side.
  • Try and get ahead and behind the defender to create the 2 v 1. Need to at least get on the cutting line where a player is eliminated with the pass
