1v1 Defensive Warm Up (10 mins)

Objective:

Players are split into pairs and each given a bib to put in the back of the shorts to act as a tail.

Players then compete against their partner to try and grab the other's tail. Players work for 20-30s trying to get the tail as many times as possible.

CP:

  • Body position and stance (knees bent, low centre of gravity, on toes ready to react and move)
  • Keep chest facing opponent to see their actions
  • Lateral movement as the opponent moves to keep body position (avoid turning hips or crossing legs)
Game can be played to have a winner (winner vs winner, king of the ring, elimination).

4v2+2 Defending Principles Warm Up (20 mins)

Game: 4v2(+2)
  • 4v2 in one grid as shown. Yellow team are aiming to make 8 consecutive passes to get a point. If the defending team win possession, or the ball is out of play, the red team become the attackers (the game changes grids) and yellow become the new defending team.

CP:
  • Defensive principles
    • Stop the forward pass
    • Stop the dribble
  • Actions of the 2nd defender
    • Cut the line of pass forward
    • Close enough to support 1st defender
  • Body shape and position of first defender
    • Low body position
    • Correct tackling foot
    • Move hips, feet and chest
  • Intent of defenders 
    • Prevent the most dangerous action first
    • Seek high pressure on the ball
    • Travel as the ball travels


Progressions:
  • Limited touches
  • Add a 3rd defender after 4 passes
  • The attacking team can progress the ball into the next grid, and score a point by dribbling over the end line. If they progress, the 2 defenders not involved are active (game becomes a 4v2 in favour of the defending team, the deepest 2 attackers can not join).

2v2+1 Defending (20 mins)

Game: 2v2+1

  • Aim is for attacking team to score a goal (the retain the ball if they score)

  • Defending team aim to win the ball as high as possible

  • If defensive team regains possession in the front half, they can counter and score

  • If they recover in the back half, they must restart play from the GK

  • Targets can move anywhere along the baseline, they have 2 touch max

CP:

  • Defending Principles
    • Stop the forward pass, stop the dribble, stop the shot
    • How? Pressure to ball / cut passing lanes / direct away from goal
  • 2nd defender actions
    • Cut forward pass
    • Prevent penetration through the middle
    • Visual triangle
    • Anticipate next action (read cues)
    • Press together

Progressions:

  • 1st time finishes are worth 3 points
  • If the ball can be won in the attacking half, the defending team are awarded an extra point

3v3 Defending (Individual + Coverage) (20 mins)

Game: 3v3

  • 3v3 game. All restarts from the GK. The defending team can only have a max of 2 players in the attacking half of the pitch. The 3rd player must be in the defensive half.
  • If the defensive team regains possession in the front half, they can counter and score.
  • If they regain in the defending half, play must restart from the GK.
  • Goals are worth 3 if the defending team are not all in the defensive half when conceding.

CP:

  • 1st defender principles
  • 2nd defender support
    • Visual triangle
    • Support 1st defender actions
    • Anticipate reading body cues of ball carrier
  • 3rd defender
    • Dominate space of opposition
    • Provide coverage
    • Maintain visual triangle
    • Anticipate next action of attack

Progressions:

  • Remove the half way line and rule 2 defenders in attacking half only
  • Defending team can continue playing wherever they recover the ball
  • Recovery in the attacking half and a goal is worth 3 points

Defending team to defend from half court.

Attacking team can get an extra point if they can beat their defender in the attacking half by a dribble.
