Final third

Area size:

Half a pitch

Pitch Geography:

6+8- 10 yards away from each other

7+11 - Ball side winger on touchline, oppo winger width of 18. 10 yards away from full back before receiving ball.

9-  On last man and in line with 6 yard.

10- Between width of 6,8

Opposition:

  • Back 4 width of 18 and in line with 18
  • 8+6  10 yards between them. Width of 18 when balls wide.
  • 1- In line with 6  yard preventing through balls.

Roles and Responsibilities:

Red 4 - Can we keep the tempo of the passing high with quick transitions.

Red 10 - creative player to create goalscoring opportunities and fluidity

Red 8 and 6 - find 10 quickly to enable numerous options to occur.

Red 9 - drag opponents out

Red 7 and 11 - provide width

Set up:

Working with the red team (7), the players will try to score as many goals as possible within a set limit of time Solutions in the final third can be found through off-ball movement that creates space for team-mates to exploit, quick combinations and interchanges, support play and direct runs that isolate vulnerable defenders (FIFA,2023). ( 8 minutes ). The blue team must try to defend and score into the goals half way up the pitch. As we are working on creating goalscoring opportunities in the final third, we will only be using the final third of the pitch in a 7 vs 7  situation . The ball will always start with the 4.  "There were 45 goals scored from crosses at FIFA World Cup Qatar" (FIFA,2023)

Conditions:

  • Blue team has 8  seconds to score into the mini goals.
Challenges:
  • Can you score from cutbacks. lifted and whipped crosses into the box
  • Can  the players underlap and overlap.
  • Can the 10 receive in-between the 8 and 6 to get shots on goal.
  •  Can we score from a third man run (10)
Target:
  • Can we score 5 crosses in a 2 minute spell.
Interventions:
  • Terminal- In-between blocks/ when play is over.
  • Concurrent- Give information quickly and precisely
  • Bullseye- Ensure IPO team understands their roles and how they can affect the play
  • Walkthrough- Explain the drill to give visual understanding.
  • Freezes- Demonstrate the buildup aspect when in positions to penetrate.

"An intervention in coaching is any planned or reactive action taken by a coach to influence the outcome of a match or training session." (Verheijen. 2005).

Coaching points:

- Number 10, can you use your body to pin the defender to receive the ball to feet and bring the 7 into play. Demonstration on the image. (Walkthrough)

- If we cant go though can we go around or over and combine with the wide players

- Keep the width (wingers) to try to drag the full backs out of position. When the ball goes wide can the 6 or 8 support, overlapping/underlapping

- Be patient, if it needs to be switched then can we switch the play

-red 6+8- Receive 5 yards off edge of 18, to be in area to either slip ball through to 11 making an inside run for a cutback. (9) making run to penalty box, (10) making run to edge of 18.

Problems and solutions:

J Defence compact width of 18+ drop - Solution- Use the wingers to then engage a fullback!! Rotations. Cut backs

W Defence high and wide- Solution- Third man runs from  8 / Underlapping runs and ball speed to get ball side players through.

What ifs:

-first touch of wingers is inside/outside (cm)

-what if defence is tight (man to man) (rotations)

-what if blue full back shuts off line

-what if back 4 drop
