Cross Traffic (10 mins)

Set Up: Use an area approximately 15*15. Have half the kids line up along each end line. Everyone has a ball. On the coach’s signal all players try to dribble across the grid to the opposite side without crashing into another player who is coming from the opposite side. If players crash, they must do a skill designated by the coach (scissors, 10 foundations, etc.) before continuing. #2. Progress to having kids dribble from all four sides so that there is traffic in all directions.

Coaching Points:

  • How do you know whether to go fast or slow? By having good vision. Go slower in tight spaces, accelerate when you have a bigger space
  • What part of your foot will you use to dribble fast? Laces/bent foot. Toes pointing down.
  • What part of your foot might you use to change direction/avoid other players? Inside/outside
  • Should the ball get closer to your foot as other’s get closer to you? As pressure gets closer, the ball gets closer to the foot

•What should you do after you push the ball past the cones?

Coaching Points:

  • Dribble directly at cones (represents a defender) before doing move
  • What should you do as soon as you do your move? Accelerate and cut off the defender
  • What happens if you do your move too late? Run into the cones (defender will get the ball)
  • What happens if you do your move too early? The defender will know where you are going

1v1 to Goals (20 mins)

Set up two fields each about 15 x 20 and separate the kids into four groups (groups should be about 3 kids). Each group/team sets up at one end of the one field in a single file line (off the field to the side of the gate). Team A initiates the game by passing a ball in to team B and the first players from each line play making a 1v1 game to small gates dribble through to score.

Any time a goal is scored, the ball goes out of bounds, or the game lasts longer than 30 seconds the players on the field go off to the outside and new players begin a new game. The transition should be quick. After 10-12 games, make sure you switch so that both teams receive the ball to start. You can even rotate teams so that they play on both fields and get different competition.

Coaching Points:

  • Where do you want to dribble before you do your move? Directly at the defender to help get him/her off balance
  • What should you do after you beat the defender? Accelerate & cut off the path of the defender
  • What do you need to do to beat the defender? Change direction & speed
  • Players must be encouraged to try moves but to go at the defender quickly, even if they make mistakes that is ok just as long as they are trying to beat the defender.

Coaching Points:

  • When is it a good time to dribble? When there is space or its 1v1
  • What should you do when your teammate has the ball? Spread out and find space
  • Why do we try to dribble past defenders? So we that we can score or pass to a teammate that can score
