Technical Practice

Organization:

Set up as shown.

Instructions:

Players are are equally placed on the yellow cones and they look to work simultaneously on their finishing from the following three scenarios.

- Scenario 1: Blue player (A) starting from the end line drives in to dribble past the mannequin using any move of his choice and quickly look to finish on goal before the edge of the box.

- Scenario 2: Once the shot has been taken by player (A), wide blue player (B) drives towards the bi-line to deliver a cross i.e. cut back cross, lofted, curl etc into player (A) that just finished on goal, the blue player (A) immediately re-adjust body position to finish off the cross.

- Scenario 2 - Blue player (C) plays a quick give-and-go with player (D) with the blue player (C) taking a good first touch out of feet to finish on goal.

- Rotation - A-B-C-D-A.

- On coach's call, the exercise is repeated on the opposite side to ensure that players finish from both sides.

Coaching Points:

- Drive in at speed to finish on goal during scenario 1.

- Quick execution of move to get past the mannequin.

- Weight, accuracy and variation of crosses.

- Accuracy over power.

- Re-adjust body position to attack the cross and finish on goal.

- Change of pace / direction.

Progression:

- Players must finish on goal within 5 seconds.

3v2 Attacking Overloads

Organization:

Set up as shown.

Instructions:

- The 3v2 attacking overloads starts with one blue attacking player on the outside of a line of three driving in to initiate the attack.

- In the example shown in the diagram, the blue player will dribble in slowly 2-3 yards before changing pace to attack the closest defender.

-  This change of pace is the cue for the second and third attackers on the blue team to join the attack aggressively and start making runs i.e. overlaps, underlaps, third-man runs to unbalance the red team and quickly finish on goal.

- Whenever the two red players win back possession, they look to score on the blue's goal. Once a goal is scored or the ball goes out of play, the blue attackers and the red defenders move to the back of their respective queues.

- Both teams play their attacking and defensive roles until coach's call for them to switch roles.

Coaching Points:

- Drive at the defender at speed to make him commit.

- Create a 2v1 situation in the 3v2 rather than a allowing opposition to force the play into a 2v2.

- If the second opposition defender creates a2v2, the job of the attacker on the ball is to find the spare player (3rd attacker).

- Movement off the ball to stretch opposition, this ensures that the overload can be utilized either via a pass or through the run acting as a decoy for the defender, thus freeing the attacker on the ball.

- Reverse & disguise passes to break opposition defensive line.

- Quick finishing with precision.

Progressions:

- 2 round competition.

- 4v2 Counter Attack.

4v2 Counter Attacks

Organization:

Setup playing area as shown.

Instructions:

- 1 blue striker is stationed in the reds half and 1 blue mid-fielder start a counter attacking playing from the deep end in the blue half to join the blue striker in the attacking half.

- As soon as the blue midfielder arrives in the attacking half, the 2 blue wingers in reds half are activated to play a 4v2 against the reds.

- The blue team have 8 seconds to score a goal.

- The 2 red defenders need to stop the 4 blue players from scoring and whenever they win back possession, they need to play forward into their wingers or their striker in the opposite half to score one point. Alternatively, the 2 red defenders can also clear the ball out of play or preferably into the blues half.

- The sequence is then repeated by the reds once play is over.

- On coach's call, the players rotate positions.

Coaching Points:

- Speed of play.

- Movement to receive the ball in behind defensive line.

- Accuracy and weight of passes.

- Support play.

- Play quick forward / penetrating pass.

- Quick finishing.

- If you play the ball wide, go around (overlap).

Progressions:

1. Add another defender to progress to 4v3.

2. Attacking team has 6 seconds to score.

3. Exercise progresses to 8v8 Practice Game.
