Scanning & Awareness W-up (15 mins)
Organisation (Practice Layout & Transition)
Players are divided into two teams of 5/6 players.
Each block run for 3 mins each, within a total of 15/20 mins
Description
Block 1:
One of the players stands in the middle of two cones, facing the player who has the ball. The player with the ball throws it to the middle player, while the player standing on the other side (behind the middle player) runs to either the blue or yellow cones. The middle player should check their shoulder, catch the ball, run around the cone of the opposite colour to where the runner went, and then throw the ball to the player who was standing behind the runner. The player who ran to the cone sits in the middle of the two cones, ready to receive the ball and facing the player with the ball. Once the ball reaches the opposite side, the direction is reversed, and the drill continues.
Block 2:
Exactly same but passing instead of throwing. The player with the ball passes it to the middle player, while the player standing on the other side (behind the middle player) runs to either the blue or yellow cones. The middle player should check their shoulder, take a touch toward the cone of the opposite colour to where the runner went, and then pass the ball to the player who was standing behind the runner. The player who ran to the cone then sits in the middle of the two cones, ready to receive the ball and facing the player with the ball. Once the ball reaches the opposite side, the direction is reversed and the drill continues.
Block 3:
Exactly same as Block 2, introducing different type of first touches and giving details of using body.
Objectives:
Scanning(Checking Shoulder)
Awareness
First touch
- Lean your body in the direction you want to go
- Little body feint before first touch
- Different type or turn (outside, inside etc.)
Adaptations (Progressions & Regressions):
If the players struggle to get used to the drill by the end of the first block, repeat it and then merge blocks 2 and 3, running each for 2 minutes.Slow down the sequence, placing more emphasis on performing the activities accurately rather than quickly.
For individuals who struggle to turn within one touch, instruct them to take a touch first and then turn.
