Technical (10 mins)

Organisation:

12 players are split up into two groups of 6 and were instructed to go on one half of the field. In the group of 6 there are going to be two teams of 3, 2 attackers and 1 defender.

Work to rest:

60 seconds x 30 seconds

Reps and sets:

4 x 2

Area Size:

30m x 25m (total)

one half: (15x25)

Primary Focus:

To develop players defensive awareness and triggers of when defending against an overload to go and press vs delay.

Explanation:

  • Players are working in pairs against 1 defender inside the area.
  • The attackers are trying to keep the ball away and maintain possession of the ball inside their half. If they manage to keep for the ball for 60 seconds they score 2 points
  • If the defender wins the ball off the 2 attackers they must dribble outside of the square to gain a point.
  • Once the defender dribbles out the area - the ball is reset with the attackers until the time limit has been reached.
  • After the 60 seconds players will swap roles in their teams of 3 until everyone has been a defender.

Coaching Points
  • Awareness (scanning) to see where the extra attacker is to try and intercept the ball
  • Body shape - being side on vs square on
  • Speed and angle of approach - don't dive in for tackles

Adaptations (Progressions & Regressions):

Progression 1: Make it a 4v2 inside each half to make it more difficult for the defenders

Regression: Make it a 2v2 to increase the success for the defenders

Challenges, Conditions or Targets:

Challenges:

Can we win the ball back 3 times in 60 seconds

Can we use a skill or turn to not be tackled from the defender

Targets:

Defenders intercept the ball and dribble outside the area = 1 point

Attackers keep the ball for 60 seconds =2 points

Attackers manage to make a split pass = 1 point for every time they do this

Conditions:

Make the area size larger to make defending the overload harder for the defenders. However, if there is no success then I would reduce the area size.

Skill - Wave Game (25 mins)

Organisation:

Players are now divided into two teams of 6 and instructed to go and stand by a cone. For one team they will be in two lines with 3 players on each cone with balls with one out of the two lines. The other team will be split into three lines with 2 players on each with balls on 2 out of the three lines.

Work to rest:

90 seconds x 30 seconds

Reps & Sets:

4 x 2

Area Size:

Endzone (5m x 25m each)

Main areas size 20m x 25m

Total area size(30m x 25m)

Primary Focus:

To develop the players understanding of the defensive triggers to go and press vs delay the opposition and forcing them to make a pass

Explanation:

  • The team which is split into 3 lines will go first and dribble in a 1v0 to towards the other teams endzone.
  • They must control the ball inside the end zone before the other team can enter the pitch. Once the 1v0 has been completed, the other team brings out 2 players to create a 2v1.
  • They then have to try and reach the oppositions endzone, if they manage to do so it create the final wave of a 3v2.
  • If the player in the 1v2 or 2v3 win the ball back they are instructed to drive into the endzone.
  • Once the final wave has finished players reset and they start again in the 1v0. Players were instructed to swap lines to ensure they all start at a different place.
  • After the first set they will swap sides.

Coaching Points:

  • Awareness (scanning) to see where the extra attacker is to try and intercept the ball
  • Body shape - being side on vs square on
  • Speed and angle of approach - don't dive in for tackles
  • For the second defender - create cover now to support teammates
  • Recognition of triggers to go and press - bad touch, bad pass
  • Communication to teammate of who is pressure vs cover

Adaptations (Progressions & Regressions):

Progressions: They can now receive a pass into the endzone but they have to control the ball in order to score.

Progression 2: Extend the final wave of the activity to a 4v3.

Regression: In the 2v1/3v2 against the defender they have to pass the ball before they can score.

Challenges, Conditions or Targets:

Challenges:

Can we look to score a point within 8 seconds

Can you try to win the ball back and score in 10 seconds

Targets:

1 point for successfully dribbling and controlling the ball in the endzone

2 points for the defending team when defending underloaded (1v2,2v3) and they intercept the ball and drive into endzone

For progression 2:

2 points for driving and controlling the ball in the endzone

1 point for making. pass and controlling the ball in the endzone

Conditions:

Make pitch size smaller/larger also the end zones too

Skill Progression - Wave Game

Organisation:

Players are now divided into two teams of 6  with a goalkeeper and instructed to go and stand by a large goal. For one team they will be in two lines with 2 players on each cone with balls with one out of the two lines with a goalkeeper. The other team will be split into three lines with players on each with balls on 2 out of the three lines also with a goalkeeper.

Work to rest:

90 seconds x 30 seconds

Reps & Sets:

3 x 2

Area Size:

35m x 40m

Primary Focus:

To develop the players understanding of the defensive triggers to go and press vs delay the opposition to prevent the opposition from scoring a goal.

Explanation:

  • Two teams are split into 6, each with a goalkeeper placed in each of the big goals.
  • The game will start with 5 players on the field 3 with the attacking team and 2 from the defending team.
  • The half way line now represents offside for the attacking team aswell.
  • If the attacking team scores, or the ball goes behind the goal, one of them will now leave the field, with them now becoming the defending team.
  • The defending team will now become the attacking team and a player will bring a new ball on the field to try and score. The activity then repeats until the time limit is reached.
  • After each rep, players were instructed to swap roles.

  • Protect the middle - force them wide or backwards

Adaptations (Progressions & Regressions):

Progression: 4v3 wave game

Regression: Remove offside line

Regression: Start with a 1v1 and the build to a 3v2

Challenges, Conditions or Targets:

Challenges:

Can we look to score a point within 8 seconds

Can you try to win the ball back and score in 10 seconds

Can you curve your run to stay onside

Targets:

1 point for attackers for scoring in the goal

2 points for the attackers if they stay onside and make a split pass and score

2 points for defending team if they win the ball back and score

3 points for defending team if they win the ball back and score within 10 seconds

Conditions:

Make pitch size smaller and taper off the corners to increase reps and balling time
