Passing Practice (10 mins)

Organisation

Half field

14 players including goalkeeper

Drill starts with 11 passing to 8,8 Cushions the past back to 11 who follows his past and plays a firmly weighted pass into 3. 3 takes a touch and passes to 6 follows his pass receives short pass off six and plays to 7 in the wide area. 7 makes a firm cross into number 9 who lays the ball off for number 10 to shoot.

Start the passing and moving sequence slowly. The first 12–15 strikes can be clipped into the goalkeeper’s hands has an early part of the warmup.

Slowly increase the pace and intensity of the passes as players get warmer.

The coach can increase the intensity by instructing the first passing player when to commence. Ie when number 3 takes his first touch, you start.

All players follow their pass

Reverse the drill so that the first pass starts with 7. Adjust 9 & 10 positioning accordingly

Progression

Reduce the time between each first pass – maximise the number of balls going at once.

Increase the length of pass between 8 & 3 and 3 & 6. When 8 plays to 3, 3 bounce a short “one-two” off and carries on to play 6.

After 2 mins, 3 now must play his second touch of the “one-two”, first time.

Positioning Game (20 mins)

Organisation

35 x 45 grid 13 players + goalkeeper.

4 v 4 Inside the grid with three bounces on each team positioned in a triangle as shown in the diagram.

Directional possession drill encouraging players to get the ball into wide areas.

Play starts with coach passing to the #4 or goalkeeper depending on who’s ball it is.

Each team can only play their own coloured bouncers.

Rotate bounces into appropriate field positions where possible to avoid the same players being outside the positioning game.

Team task

Can we move the opposition around and get the ball to our wide bouncers?

Player task

6,8 can you get the ball to either 7 or 11 as quickly as possible?

If you can’t get it directly to 7 or 11 can you play someone who can?

9, 10 can you position yourself so you can see the ball and 7 or 11?

7,11, can you get the ball to 9 or 10 as quickly as possible with a killer pass?

Progression

To score a goal either team must keep possession and hit all three bounces without losing the ball to the opponent.

When you pass the ball to a bouncer you now change positions with the bouncer coming into the grid and the passing player becoming a bouncer.

The team with the GK only switch bouncers with field players 7-11.

Coaches cues

When in BP,can you position yourself so you can see as many passing options as possible?

If we win the ball back, always try to create left, right, central and far passing options?

Can you always see the ball and a teammate in space?

When receiving the ball can you take your first touch into an area where you can pass to 7 or 11?

Game Training (25 mins)

Organisation

Half field

14 players

Blue team 1- 4–2 formation

yellow team 1 – 3–3 formation with a bouncer on the by-line between the small goals.

10 meter, no defender zones in from the sideline.

One big goal

2 small goals on half way line.

Explanation

Coaching the yellow team to create chances in wide areas. 7, 11 operate in a 10-meter zone on the inside of the sideline.

No blue defenders are allowed into this zone. They can block crosses coming in but can’t encroach on the wide zone The yellow team can only score a goal from a cross from wind areas i.e. 7 or 11 The blue team score in the small goals on the halfway line.

Play starts with the number four in the yellow team.

For variation, occasionally the coach may play to the goalkeeper for the blue team to play out.

Offside rule applies.

If 7 crosses from the right, 11 can attack the cross in the box and Vice Versa. After that chance they go back and play in their zone.

Team task

Can we get the ball to our 7 or 11 to create scoring chances?

Player tasks

Six, eight, 10 can you combine to get quality service to 7, 11?

6,8,10 can you play a killer pass to 7 or 11 in behind the opponent’s defence?

7 ,11 can you run in behind the opponent’s defense to receive a killer pass?

7, 11 can you get quality service into 9, 10.

9, 10 when 7,11 pull their foot back to cross the ball, can you accelerate in between and in behind defenders.

6,8 can you make late runs into the box to score?

Progression

Remove 10-meter zone and defenders can now defend all areas of the pitch

7,11 can now cut inside and create and score

Must score with a first time finish

Coaching cues

Concentrate on the weight of pass when playing in behind defenders.

When attacking a cross try to time at your run so you are not offside.

When 7,11 are getting in a position to cross can you make your first run away from the ball and out of the defender’s line of vision and then change direction and attack the ball.

Can we try and turn defenders around and play in behind?

When attacking crosses lean over the ball and keep it down.
