Defending the Long Ball (20 mins)

Objective - compactness,create optimal defending distances

Main Principles

1. Build defending shape - Reactive -keep block

  • Make team compact:vertical and horizontal
  • Train defenders to read when to drop
  • Forwards to back press steal space away

2. Build mental pressure on the ball - Proactive -force mistake

• Move as a collective unit: make the play predictable
• Initiate pressure on the opponent with the ball
• Engage when chance of regaining the ball

Technical Phase (10 mins)

Set up 4 cones. 1 cone each side of the six yard box and another 2 just outside the 18 yard box the width of the six yard box apart. Evenly split the players on each of the cones. the players behind the cones by the six yard box are passing the ball to the players outside the 18 yard box who then take 1/2 touches then have a shot at the goal. after taking the shot the player changes position with the player who has made the pass.

Mechanics of Technique

1. Non kicking foot to side of ball

2. Angle of approach

4. Make eye contact with the ball

5. Part of the ball you make contact with and follow through

Speed (10 mins)

Purpose: teach the players to use back to goal moves to enable a finish

Set up: 

GK

4 players

Full size goal 

3 manequins around 10 - 16 metres from goal 

3 passers around 6 - 10 metres from manequins

Vary distances based on ability of the players

Action: 

Attacker (shown with yellow vest) starts on manequin #1, receives a pass from a team mate, executes a move to enable a finish, then finishes

Attacker repeats action at manequins 2 and 3.   

Let attacker have a total of 3 or 6 shots. 

Encourage attacker to 

- use a variety of back to goal moves to enable a finish 

- use different type of shots: pass into net, curling shot, power strike

Coach:

Graduated pressure: 

1) replace one or all manequins with a defender who applies passive pressure (doesn't try to tackle, just tries to block a shot) 

2) replace manequins with unrestricted defenders
