Individual Footskills (10 mins)

Set Up: Every player inside a large zone, every player has a ball. Each player dribbles the ball around avoiding contact with other players. On the coach’s signal, the players perform the footskill that was demonstrated.

Every time a player does a skill encourage them to try to dribble to split two other players, if they perform the skill and dribble between two other players they get a point. If they bump into somebody else or lose control of their ball they lose all their points.

  • Skills to work on: Patterns: Zig-Zag, Roll. Turning: Pullback, inside and outside Chop. Forward: Stab Push, Scissors, 1-Foot V-Pull, 2-Foot V Pull

Coaching Points:

  • Always looking for space when dribbling
  • Accelerate into space after doing move
  • Keep ball close when dribbling

3v2 to goal (20 mins)

Set Up:

Use an area approximately 30x25, where players are split into two teams. Team attacking the big plays with 3 players while the team defending the big goal plays with 2 players and tries to score on the 2 counter gates. Initiate the game by the defensive team passing across to opposition; or the coach serving a ball in to the attacking team. Team of 3 always receive the ball to start each game

Be sure to switch sides so that both teams get a chance to attack and defend.

Progression: Add an offside line to the activity. Check with the players quickly to see if they get the general concept, you do not need to bog them down with laborious details, simply explain that they should not just be hanging out by the goal waiting (cherry picking) and should be looking for spaces to run into to receive the ball.

Coaching Points:

  • When is a good time to dribble? When you have space
  • When is a good time to pass? When the defender is close to me and my teammate is open
  • What should you do when your teammate is dribbling with the ball? Move to a place I can receive the ball (not stand behind the defender)
  • What should you do if the defender takes away the pass? Dribble or shoot
  • What are some movements you could make when your teammate is dribbling the ball? Diagonal run, overlapping run
  • If your teammate is running where do you want to play the ball? In front of them so that they can receive the ball without having to stop/turn around.

    Scrimmage 7v7 (30 mins)

    Scrimmage 7v7.

We will play a 2-3-1 formation with our Academy players. Please refer to the positions as they are named in the diagram for throughout the season. (center back, center mid, right sided player, left sided player, target/forward).

This is the first time many of the 9U players (some of the 10U players as well) will be playing 7v7. Please help the players with their positioning and general shape so that they start getting an idea of what it might look like on game day. You will need to be patient with many of the players at this time of the year.

Employ a coaching in the game method for the scrimmage.

Key Areas the players will need help:

    • Restarts (goal kicks, throw ins, corner kicks)
    • On goal kicks or when the keeper has the ball in their hands make sure the defending team backs up behind the build out line (dashed line on each 7v7 field)
    • Maintaining space based on positional role (most 9Us will struggle with this for the time being)
    • Staying connected as a team based on the position of the ball e.g. making sure the center backs step up to about half field when their team has the ball near the opponent's goal
    • Same effort level whether your team is defending or attacking
