General Practice; Final Third: Striker Resilience

Your striker hasn’t scored for six weeks and has stopped getting into goal scoring positions and this practice encourages them to get on the ball and and either create opportunities to assist or score alone.

Organisation / Area:

  • 36x40 yds (LXW)
  • x2 teams 5 red vs 4 blue, creating an overload for the red team to aid the strikers resilience.
  • x20 balls
  • x2 4 minute blocks with 1 minutes intervention and 1 minute summary.
Explanation:

5v4 game scenario encouraging the striker to get on the ball and either assist or score alone.  Striking team will scoring in the large goal, whilst defenders on regain of possession are to score in small goals.

How:

Strikers will set up with a forward 3 and 2 attacking midfielders, whilst the defenders set up as back 3 with 1 holding midfielder.  Ball will be played into attacking midfielders who will build up play quickly and encourage play through the central ST.  If this is not on then play will look to go wide and to ST or back to CAM.  Striking team can shoot at any point.  Defending team on regain of possession should look to play a punch pass into one of the small goals.

Conditions / Challenges:

  • Strikers are encouraged to create an opportunity within 10 seconds.
  • 1st progression; Can we find the ST before scoring to bounce a pass off.
  • 2nd progression; Can we find the ST who could attempt to pin and roll or come away from the defender quickly with positive body movement and open out the body to score.
  • 3rd progression; Can we identify best possible areas to create a goal scoring opportunity.
Key Points:
  • Where am i best placed as striker to score?
  • What picture does my body tell my team mates and my own mind?
  • Positive can do attitude will prevail.
