Description

Session Objective: To improve players' ability to win 1v1 defensive duels

Technical Outcomes: 

  • Delaying the opponent (Slowing them down) 
  • Arrive with the right body position (surf-board)
  • Engaging the attacker when they have taken a heavy touch or they have slowed down
  • Ensuring your angle of approach doesn't allow the attacker to play forward and you block passing lanes
  • Making play predictable for the attacker on the ball E.g showing him the line or towards a teammate that doesn't have space

Warm Up - Skill Intro (15 mins)

Set Up:

  • Players: 9 
  • Grid size: 10m x 5m per group

Explanation:

  • Players will split into three groups of three
  • The aim for the attackers is to get from one end to the other as many times as possible
  • The defender must try to stop an attacking player and win the 1v1 duel
  • Attacking players will then rotate to become the defender and the defender will join the end of the attacking line.
  • Swap groups every 5mins
Player Actions:
  • Can you delay the attacker on the ball and slow him down
  • Can you engage the attacker and try to win the ball if they have slowed down/taken a heavy touch
  • Can you arrive with the right body shape and show the player one way  
  • Can your angle of approach ensure that the attacker can't play forward and you block any passing lanes
  • Can you tackle with the foot that will allow you to keep possession

Warm up- Competetion (15 mins)

Set Up:

  • Players: 9
  • Grid size: 20m x 20m

Instructions:

  • One player will start defending and one attacking as shown in the diagram
  • The player attacking must try to beat the defender and dribble into the scoring zone
  • The defender must prevent the attacker from beating them and try to win the ball - The defender cannot defend higher than the green line
  • If the defender wins the ball they get a point
  • Once the action is over, the attacker becomes the defender and they defend against a new player. Once a player defends, they goes to the top of the gird and joins the back of the line to become an attacker

Key Coaching Points:

Main Part - Skill Training (20 mins)

Set Up:

  • Players: 9
  • Grid Size: 2 grids 25m Long x 15m Wide

Explanation: 

  • In the area shown in the diagram, 1 attacker plays against 1 defender 
  • The play starts with the attacker choosing one gate to go around (They must run around the furthest cone). Whichever gate he chooses, the defender must run around the nearest opposite cone. 
  • Once in the gird the attacker must aim to beat the defender, dribble through one of the gates and score a goal.
  • If the defender wins the ball they must try to pass though one of the gates 

Objective: To win the duel and pass the ball forward through the gates  



Player Actions:
  • Can you delay the attacker on the ball and slow him down
  • Can you engage the attacker and try to win the ball if they have slowed down/taken a heavy touch
  • Can you arrive with the right body shape and show the player one way  
  • Can your angle of approach ensure that the attacker can't play forward and you block any passing lanes

Player Cues: 

  • As soon as the attacker is dribbling towards you, can you position yourself in a way that he can't play forward
  • If the attacker has taken a heavy touch, can you engage him and win the ball 
  • If the attacker has slowed down, can you get close and not allow them to accelerate 
  • If you are beat, can you recover your position and get yourself between the ball and the goal 

Step up:  

  • Take away attacking gates 
  • 2v1 attacking 
Step down: 
  • 2v1 defending 
  • Reduce grid size

Skill Game (20 mins)

Set Up:

  • Players: 10-14 
  • Grid Size: 2 x 20m wide x 25m long with a halfway line and a small goal at each end 

Explanation: 

  • 2 Grids - 3v3 with goals at each end
  • Play starts with the attacking team from the back. All the players must be in the back half except for 1 defender and 1 attacker who will be in the front half as shown on the diagram
  • The team can progress the ball into the front half by passing into the attacker or by dribbling over the halfway line
  • Once the ball crosses over it is a free game
  • If a goal is scored after a player has won a 1v1 defensive duel the goal counts for three
  • Play always restarts from the back half 

Team objective: 

  • To win a 1v1 defensive duel and keep possession of the ball

Key Session Observations:

  • Training game is there to give the opportunity to players to PLAY FOOTBALL whilst applying the learning from the first components of the session. 
  • Assess how much 'teaching and learning has taken place
