Player roles and responsibilities

We are the team in possession in RED

-2/3: Create overload in wide channel, your trigger to overlap is ball being played into your inside assistant (8/10)

-4/5: Command your back line, shift across with play, ensure 2/3 not involved in attack tucks in to back line

-6:  Continue to be the central point of the team, switch the point of attack when possible

-7/11: Offer width in wide channel when 2/3 are under pressure, tuck in to give them wide channel if they have space, ready to make diagonal run to interior channel if you see the 8/10 in a position to play a straight pass between the opponents defensive line

8/10: Be the inside option at all times for the 2 and 7/3 and 11, ready to play the pass that will break the opponents defensive line.

9: Always offer a forward passing option, it will likely be to feet with your back to goal so you can assist in the build up and/or the switch from one side of the field to the other

Step 1: Create space

The shaded area represents the attacking third where we will be looking to create goal scoring opportunities from the wide channels.

We are the team in possession in red.

Scenario

The 2 has played the ball to the 7 who has backed out to the touch line to force the Blues across the field. If there is space in the wide channel, the 7 may receive across their body to open up on their forward foot and start their run down the line. If this is not an option, then we have effectively 'baited' our opponent and can now begin to switch the ball.

Step 2: The switch

The 7 has 2 predictable passes, back to the 2 who should be supporting in the wide channel or inside to the 8, who is the assistant for these two wide players and creates the triangle between them.

As we have 'baited' the opponent into the right hand side of the field, the space is most likely to be on the left hand side of the field. It is important the left hand side players see this and begin to shift across ready to exploit that space. (3,10 & 11)

The example in this diagram shows a simple passing pattern between the 8, 9 and 6 to carry out the switch but any combination of passes that works the ball across relieving the pressure is great, the intention is to get the ball across to the left hand side with speed and efficiency.

Both wide players move out wide (3&11) before moving forward to create further space. The 10 also moves across with the intent to carry out the same role as the 8 the opposite side for the 3 and the 11.

*It is important for our back line to shift across the field also at this point, the 2 tucking in and the centre backs to move across and cover the space and the 3 moving out off the back line as the ball is switched across*

Step 3: The overload

The next step will be based on the decision of the opposition 2. As the opponents 7 is likely to be out of the game at this point their 2 will have to make a decision to press our 3 or hold their back line. Either is fine for us.

3 can play a ball down the line to the 11 (Straight pass, straight run), however to create an overload a pass to the 10 inside will create two new passing options:

1. Straight pass, diagonal run from 11 into the interior channel- 1v0 against keeper/opportunity to cut back across box

2. Diagonal pass, straight run from 3 into the wide channel- 1v0/1v1 with opportunity to cross into box

Crosses & runs

Cross from wide channel:

-This cross will be aimed between the posts, in the space between the 6 yard box and the penalty spot

-It is likely this cross needs to be in the air as there will likely be defenders ready to block the cross at the opponents near post

*7 will be making a run to the back post to ensure if the ball comes all the way across the box they are there to tap it in at the back post

*8 will be making their run to the middle of the goal between the 6 yard box and penalty spot

*9 will always run to the front post to draw players across and be the first to the ball if the cross does not go over them

*10 will make a move to the edge of the box after likely being the player to make the final pass to the 3

Cross from interior channel:

-This cross will be aimed in between the posts, in the space between the penalty spot and the edge of the 18 yard box

-This cross will most likely need to be on the floor as a cut back

Everyone will make the same runs as above, of course if the option is available then feel free to play across to the 9, 10 & 11 although their role is to draw players into the box for the near side centre midfielder to be free on the edge

*7/11 and 8/10 swap role depending on if they are the near side player during the attack or on the far side*
